Janice asks:
I am a 17 year old girl with wavy hair and the major problem with my hair is that it is becoming dry and brittle..with a lot of frizz and split ends. I have heard that these are the basic signs of hair loss. But nobody in my family has a hair loss problem, so could it be down to poor diet as I don’t use styling tools either? Whenever I tie a ponytail, I see small hairs on top looking lifeless and frizzy. What could be the root of the problem and what can I do to tackle this? I’d appreciate your advice.

Yes your diet can affect your hair the same way it does your nails and skin, so drink plenty of water. Keep your hair regularly cut to reduce and prevent split ends. Brittle and dry hair is not the first sign of hair loss - but if people tell you things like that the worry alone will make it fall out! The short hairs that escape from your ponytail could be a sign of new hair that has grown through or it may be that your hair is wavy and the hair cuticle sits in different directions. To minimise damage, try not to colour your hair too much and use weekly conditioning treatments to keep hair healthy.

i really need your help! a few months back i bleached my hair too much, big mistake of course, my hair started stretching and breaking, i started using coco nut oil and using protein shampoos and conditioners on my hair, but now my hair is still breaking and falling out, i’m really worried that i’m going to end up with no hair!

Using products packed with protein is the first thing that springs to mind - however in this case you may have overdone the protein on top of severely damaged hair - making the hair even more brittle. Because of the intensity of protein on the hair it isn’t recommended for long-term use and should be reviewed at this point. I would thoroughly recommend using Kerastase Nutritive range, which is intensely moisturising without protein. I Would definitely recommend a cut as well, split ends can worsen over time if they are left. The more you can have cut, the better. ...More >
After 6 weeks move back onto a repair programme: Use the Kerastase Resistance Bain Force Architecte (shampoo) and Ciment Anti-Usure (conditioner) for every wash, and the Electric Intensive Treatment Masque every 7 days. If you blowdry or use other heated styling tools I would highly recommend the use of Kerastase Resistance Ciment Thermique. If you do not use heated styling tools, the Elixir Ultime moringa immortel (Green) would be the recommended product, it is designed to condition damaged hair and can be used on wet or dry.
Give this programme 12 weeks and with regular trims your hair will be tip top in no time!

Maryam asks:
I have been having my hair relaxed for the past 2 years but still carried on straightening it every other day. My hair is now so damaged that I have lots of split ends and breakage every time I brush my hair. My hair is quite thin as I lose a lot. I have been using shampoo and conditioner from the Nioxin range as well as their styling products. My hairdresser has recommended a steam conditioning treatment which I will be having next week. She also advised me to buy the T3 Wet to Dry Straighteners. I do not know if they will be suitable for my hair though.

It sounds like your hair needs a long holiday! If you chemically straighten your hair do you still need to straighten it with heat every other day? I think you should give either the relaxing or the heat straightening a miss and focus on getting your hair back in good condition. Your hairdressers suggestion about steam treatments is good, have a few of these to increase the moisture content of your hair, this will strengthen it and increase its elasticity, thus greatly reducing the breakage you have been experiencing. Also, the Wet2Straight from Remington is a very good hair straightener that will straighten your hair excellently whilst reducing the damage that, typically, conventional hair straighteners cause. Also, use rich, deep penetrating reconditioning treatments a hope a couple of times a week. Your hair will soon start to improve, stop breaking and grow longer
