Daisy asks:

I have waist length, naturally dark brown hair and last week I went to a salon to get it coloured for the first time. I wanted the Balayage style with a slightly lighter brown. After the treatment, I couldn�t see any difference in the salon but now I�m home I see a very rusty/brassy uneven colour on my hair. It�s blotchy in places with red tones and my hair feels very damaged and dry. I had no split ends before this but now I have a lot of split ends and in general my hair is dried out and frizzy, even after conditioning treatments. I�m not sure what to do now. I don�t want to use a colour stripper, because it�s often damaging and I can�t afford to go back to a salon (they charged me about 200 pounds for this awful cut and colour).

If your hair has been ruined by a colourist, the best thing to do is complain at the time and refuse to pay full price. Explain why it�s not what you wanted and how it�s different to what you asked for. Most salons will simply refund you or offer to correct the damage, as they won�t want to damage their reputation. I recommend that you go back to the salon and explain why you are unhappy. Ask for a full consultation before you proceed with the colour correction.

I have recently moved to an area where the house has a water softener. My hair has gone dull, lifeless, dry, lacking shine and I never feel like I have rinsed it enough times so am probably damaging the hair shaft even more. Please can you tell me what I can do to combat this? Does soft water ruin hair? Any suggestions would be really helpful.

I would recommend you invest in a moisturising shampoo and conditioner. The K�rastase Nutritive Bain Satin 1 Shampoo and Lait Vital Conditioner will add back some of the moisture your water softener has washed out. Soft water doesn�t necessarily damage your hair, but you may notice it can still feel a bit greasy on fine hair. I would also recommend rinsing your hair in cool water to close the hair shaft.

Paula asks:

Can highlights disguise grey roots? Which product would you recommend that I use? My hairdresser used L�Oreal Majimeche with excellent results the first time, but the next appointment that I booked for a refresh seemed to have no impact at all on the grey growth. Please can you help?

Highlights can disguise grey roots, but will not cover them 100%. I would recommend using a pre-lightener and a natural lowlight to blend in the colour with your hair on the ends. To answer your question about your second visit, you may not have seen such a big impact if your regrowth wasn�t as obvious as it was on your first visit.
