Dare to go bold with dramatic bright colours by hairstylist to the stars
1. Candy pink and rosy tints
Hair: Wella
Now that Cara Delevigne has joined the candy brigade, it's official – brightly coloured hair is a trend which isn't going anywhere soon. Certainly this is a dramatic look, but with more women daring to reach for the hair dye, you can truly embrace candy floss hair and make the look your own. Since this is becoming such a huge trend, there's now plenty of stores on the high street where you can buy your colour of choice, so why not have a browse at the shades available? Even though this isn't a natural look, it's important to choose the right shade of pink for your skin tone – a light coloured shade is beautiful on pale skin, whilst darker shades can embrace a darker, more rose like tint. There's also lots of formulas, from easy to use bottles of dye to hair chalk which can be applied at the ends of the hair for a non-permanent look, which is perfect for anyone who wants to try this trend out for one weekend only. If you're still unsure then book an appointment with your favourite hairdresser, who'll be able to recommend a colour to suit you.
2. Embrace the colours of the rainbow
Hair: Vivienne Mackinder
Think this trend stops at pink? You're mistaken – our favourite celebrity icons from Zayn Malik to Georgia May Jagger are embracing plenty of different shades to make this looktheir own. This trend is a nod back to the grunge fashion that was favoured by Kate Moss, but also embraces the bright shades of eighties fashion which we'll be seeing much more of next season. Celebrities are mixing up colour palettes, from a bright blue all over hue to a mix of bold colours all blended together, so it's up to you how you want to try this look. A great combination of shades to try is a mix of pastels, including pale pink, peach and baby blue, which combined together produce a beautiful but dramatic effect. There's really no right or wrong way to try this trend, so go as dramatic as you like!
3. Feather lights and balayage
Hair: Matthew Luke
If the more dramatic hair shades simply aren't your style then there's other ways to embrace colour, which is a good way to try out this look if you don't want to break the office dress code! Using the colours you had as a child, hairdressers hand paint your locks and assess your face shape for highlights which will appear more natural and emphasize your best facial features. Depending on how dramatic you want to look, colour is worked in a range of tones from root to tip, which is perfect for anyone who's never dyed their hair or wants to embrace this season's look in a natural way. A subtle blend of tones is adapted to suit your own personal style, and you can also get this look at home by applying lighter dye in sections around your face for a subtle, beautifully natural effect.
4. Caring for your colour
Unfortunately these more dramatic tones can play havoc with your hair's condition, so it's more important than ever to keep your hair looking healthy to avoid breakage and ensure your colour lasts as long as possible. Invest in an effective conditioning mask and don't limit your use of this product to once a week – use the treatment whenever your hair starts to feel dry to avoid split ends. Make sure you visit your hairdresser immediately after embracing dramatic colour to chop off your hair's dry ends to ensure that your locks looks fresh and healthy for longer. And most importantly, use a colour correcting shampoo each week to ensure the tone of your hair doesn't change – a blue or purple shampoo is good, and many salon brands will provide shampoos specifically for peach hair or other dramatic tones to help the colour becoming brassy or fading early.
5. Dip dye with dramatic shades
Hair: Inanch
A way in which many women are looking to try the dramatic looks of the season is with a simple dip dye, where bright colour is only applied at the ends of the hair and a semi permanent dye is used. This is great for women who want to try the trend but only for a few weeks at a time – however, preparation is important and can take time, as most hair tones will need a bleach or toner first so that the ends of your hair will ‘grip' the bright shades better. Purple and darker colours give both a quirky yet sophisticated feel to black hair, whilst the lightest dip dye hues should be left to blondes and light browns if you want to avoid too much damage. If your hair is very long and needs a cut, then try out this trend before – once you're ready, you can cut off the ends and have your natural hair colour back again.
