Piya asks:
I am an Indian with middle length dark brown hair. My hair is very silky but light. The problem is that my scalp is a little oily but my hair is dry. I found it very difficult to choose any product because I am confused whether to buy an oil free shampoo or a moisturising one. Moreover these days I have come to China to spend my summer with my Dad. The weather conditions are totally different from India there is a lot of moisture in the air and also the water here is more chlorinated. The thing which has never happened with me is happening now – hair fall and hair breakage. I don’t know what to do or which shampoo to use. Please recommend me some good hair products according to my hair type and I would be really obliged if you could give me some tips to take care of my hair this summer.

I would recommend a shampoo for oily hair maybe L’Oreal Professional Pure Resource shampoo, this product removes any sort of build up on the hair and scalp and leaves it at a healthy p.h balance which promotes better stronger regrowth. I would strongly recommend for the middle lengths and ends Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser which will prevent any more breakage and strengthen your hair and leave it bouncy and shiny. These are the products we use at our Manchester salon, of course I am not sure if these products are available in China
Melissa asks:
I’ve noticed my hair has started breaking off at the back of my head. I have long hair and I’m left with clumps of hair that are only 2-3" long! It’s happening around my crowns (I have double crowns) which leads me to think it’s because of backcombing (I used to backcomb to stop the hair from parting at the crown), does this sound plausible? (I’m a bit worried all my hair’s going to break off hence why I’m trying to find a pattern /cause!). Inspecting the hair that’s left, it doesn’t look like it’s got split ends but does look dry. I’ve come to terms with cutting to the collarbone to improve condition but mostly the appearance (as it looks very sparse at the ends now because of the hair I’ve lost) but I’d rather not cut it to the length of the remaining strands! Will the broken hair grow? Is there anything I can do to encourage growth/improve the condition of the hair? (Because of the double crowns, I have to blow dry that area where the broken hair is, but use the cool setting on my hairdryer - is that ok? Needless to say, have stopped backcombing!

There are a number of reasons for hair to break, which could be over processing with chemicals, too much heat, back combing, the wrong choice of brush etc. You are right to stop back combing and use as little direct heat on your hair as possible. I would also agree that a good cut will improve your hair dramatically and I would also recommend intensive conditioning treatments at your salon, as all product houses have specific shampoos and conditioners to help restore the strength of your hair.
Kate Champs asks:
My hair got ruined a few months ago when a hairdresser tried to give me a sun kissed look, with lighter highlights on the bottom, and my natural dark hair colour on top. However for some reason, the bleach frazzled my hair, and after a week the ends were so bad, pieces were breaking off and it was impossible to comb through. I complained at the hairdressers who dyed in black and said that should sort it. It didn’t though, and I still have this awful hair. I’ve been to other hairdressers who tell me different things. One said I’ve lost the elasticity in the bottom of my hair. I’ve wanted long hair for ages, and have had to cut off a lot so that my hair is shoulder length, to get rid of the frizz, but there’s still about an inch and a half of frizz still there. The top of my hair is still normal and shiny. Do you think I need to chop it all off and go short?? I just want someone to be honest so I can get it chopped off, and then get on with growing it back again

What a nightmare! I know the trend you were trying to recreate - the dip dye, it’s been really popular but I can see how it went wrong in this case. Unfortunately, I think you already know the answer I’m going to give. Unless you have the damaged hair cut off your hair will continue grow slowly and look frizzy. Can I recommend a product of mine, read the reviews on the Boots website, or search for some blog write ups - the Hair Growth Treatment from my hair care range? It contains a Pro Growth complex and a vitamin and mineral complex that will improve your hair condition and whip it into shape for growth.
