I have recently had chemotherapy and lost most of my hair. The chemo is nearly over and I have to go back to work which requires me to wear my hair in a bun. This is not practical with a wig so I was wondering if extensions would be a good option. What do you suggest as the best type and what sort of cost would I be looking at.

The Racoon International ’Hair in Recovery Programme’ will offer a tested, approved and trusted hair extensions service that is structured to be both accessible and affordable to as many women as possible.

Racoon has developed a unique training course that offers a specialized service to people who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. Research to develop this specialist training and service has been conducted under the guidance of Iain Sallis A.I.T Consultant Trichologist who has clinics at three Nuffield Hospitals.

A pilot scheme is being launched by the company which is seeking 100 women to take part in the programme. Once the pilot is completed, Racoon is planning to roll out the service nationwide through its network of 5, 000 appointed salons. It is also hoped that the service will eventually be offered through the NHS. Racoon International will subsidise 70% of the cost of hair and their unique bonding system to the patient, and all Racoon salons will reduce their hourly rate for application and maintenance visits. Racoon say that the cost of a full head, including application, will range from £155 for 10" hair to £170 for 12" hair. The hair is reusable and with regular salon care should last the patient between 6 and 12 months. Ethical sourcing of the hair is guaranteed.

Full consultation prior to application, care advice and instructions post application and regular salon check up visits will ensure that the patient’s extensions, existing hair and scalp are kept in tip top condition.

My natural hair colour is medium brown and I have always used home hair dyes and have gone for chestnut colours I have also used glue in (bonded) hair extensions and I have had these for 3 years and love them! I decided that I wanted to go blonde so I used a hair stripper and then hair dyes and finally after a week of hard work it went blonde but a very yellowish warm blonde. I went to the salon and he did not want to touch it and gave me Schwarzkopf professional bonacure hair therapy true silver shampoo, which came out like purple ink and I must say it toned my yellow hair brilliantly but my ends stayed a purple colour. I went back to my salon and he did not want to touch my hair again! I put a summer blonde all over and it worked yet it was still yellowish and I want more like a Sienna or Alex Curren blonde rather than a cheap yellow colour.. I kept it for about 2-3 weeks and already my roots were through! I found a love blonde colour which I wanted by Garnier 100% colour which was lightest ash blonde so I put it on and it is now grey all over! I feel depressed now and worn out with it all, I went to the salon and again he would not touch it! So I went to 2 other salons and they too will not touch my hair. Its not in really bad condition either believe it or not! I have always been good with my hair and never had drastic problems like this but now I am getting tired of it all!! Is there any home remedies or hair colours I can use to get this grey out! Please do not tell me to go to a salon and get it done properly or to find someone to do it professionally for me as I cannot afford it as I have spent enough already and I cannot find anyone to touch it! Can you please give me advise on how I can get from this grey to a blonde because I am stubborn and I do not want to give up and chuck a chestnut hair dye all over, I feel that I have come this far and need to be blonde and get my extensions back in!

I really think you need to give your hair a break from all this colouring! Hairdressers are professionals and have trained for many years to become experts and really do know what they are talking about. When you highlight or go blonde, then the downside is that your roots will show through and you will need to maintain them regularly. I am sorry but I would only be able to advice you to seek professional help - if money is an issue, then see about student nights/days and be a colour correction case-study. Hair extensions will only be applied to hair that is in good condition, again your hairdresser will advice if your hair in its current condition is suitable for extensions. Have you tried to speak to the Garnier helpline about this? They may be able to advice you. Sorry but as a professional hairdresser, I would only be able to advice you to seek professional help.

My natural hair colour is medium brown I have not long had my hair dyed to dark brown, however I really want to try something different and want to try and go blonde I did have light blonde hair when I was younger. I wear clip in hair extensions but am finding it hard to go blonde and getting matching hair extensions as my Sister in Law is a hairdresser and thinks it would be too harsh on my hair as I will need it bleached however she did try and make a suggestion as to slowly building up the colour with blonde highlights but I’m finding it hard to find a colour 4 extensions with some SB highlights can you help me.

Your Sister in Law seems to have the right idea in respect of going blonde - you cannot lift tint with tint. So if you try to change your hair colour from the base colour dark brown to blonde I think you may find it will go yellow or orange. ...More >

I certainly would go for highlights but instead of blonde maybe go for a more chic look with caramel and honey tones.

If you are wanting certain shade of blonde then I would advise that you visit a professional salon that specialises in hair extensions - that way you can choose your exact colour blonde and they won’t damage your hair. Using hair extensions will give you a soft highlighted look and the other plus of course is that you will have added volume and length too. A good salon will give you a full consultation with no obligation to book in for them.

Make sure you find a good specialist in this field.
