What hair products are you using? If you are just drying it with no styling or heat protection this will be why you are getting puffy, frizzy hair. Styling products will not only protect your hair but create a style. But, do not go mad with products, just use one or two to create the desired effect otherwise it will go too sticky or too limp. Use a frizz reducing product whilst you hair is damp and then blow-dry straight or curly.

To be honest, all colouring whether dark or light will include a certain amount of maintenance. If you go such a drastic block dark colour then the roots will be visible and top ups will be needed every month or so. With highlights/lowlights this will help to mask the red hair and the maintenance is not as full on so this may be an option you would like to consider. It's a tough one, I am afraid because we all know that as he grows older it will not be such an issue but if you do go down the colouring route, maintenance will be required.

Layers are best left to the professionals as they can really transform a style. Layers are like an optical illusion and are a fantastic way to give hair instant body and volume. They are really versatile and can be used to varying effect, so in order to gain dramatic volume cut the layers shorter around the crown or for a more graduated and subtly volume lift go for longer layers. Just remember that the front of the hair is more noticeable so if you cut it wrong, it is harder to hide!
