I feel exactly the same way and I am a hairdresser! First of all, explain to your stylist how you feel, so they can reassure you. Any reputable stylist knows that the consultation with a client is crucial and this should flow throughout the appointment to ensure you are completely happy with the service. A great way to get over your fear is to ask for your hair to be washed and blow dried straight before the cut begins. You can see exactly how much is coming off. Remember that a trim is vital for healthy hair and it will leave your locks looking and feeling great.

I have done rebonding for the past four years or so. I was wondering if rebonding or flat ironing hair a few times a week would be more damaging? I am considering stopping rebonding treatments as they are quite costly. I have unruly frizzy curly hair naturally. Please advise.

Hi Haseena, rebonding breaks down the bonds in your hair using chemicals, and damages the inner structure of the hair (Cortex), which is irreversible. Flat ironing hair (straightening and blow-drying) is still damaging to the hair, but heat damage is better than chemical damage. Therefore, flat ironing is a better choice as you can then control a lot of the damage by using products that protect the hair from harsh elements such as heat. I recommend using products such as the Mizani Thermasmooth range, which is for naturally curly hair that is styled straight and blocks out humidity to help keep it styled for days. I am Afro-Caribbean and my hair is relaxed but it’s very short and thick. I am wondering if you could recommend some products that will help my hair to lengthen and thicken. I’ve seen black girls with relaxed hair go on a "hair journey" in which their hair is long & thick so it must be possible! I have been using the products Aphogeen leave-in conditioner, shea moisture thickening mist, olive oil hair lotion & almond oil for the past 3 months and have seen very little change and the products are running out. There are many suggestions of products on the Internet but I would love to buy some products that I know would actually help my hair.

Hi Sylvia! This is the hardest stage to go through for anyone with Afro-Caribbean hair. And correct, it is a hair journey indeed! Firstly, stop using the relaxer. So, now you need to assess what your hair is lacking. Is it moisture or strength? Is it feeling rough and dry? If so you need moisture. Is it breaking off and split? If it is, then you need strength. If you are unsure, there are simple tests you can do yourself: when the hair is wet stretch it. If it returns back to its natural length the strength is good. If it carries on stretching (like chewing gum) you need protein. This simple self-diagnosis will help ‘prescribe’ the products needed.

Moisture: Try the H20 Intense Night-time treatment by Mizani. This can be done once a week at home to pack hair full of the moisture it’s lacking. When combing the hair, be delicate, and use the Mizani D’tangle Moisturizing Leave-in Milk.
