The Hairdressers Charity Fundraising Ball
The Hairdressers Charity hosted its annual fundraising ball recently with over 200 guests from sponsors, manufacturers, trade editors, industry bodies and influencers, alongside hairdressers from across the country.
The glamorous evening held at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel involved networking, a catwalk hair show, awards, plus fundraising and was hosted by co-President’s Samantha Grocutt from Essence PR and Philip Sharp from ASP. The evening was also the perfect opportunity to launch the new charity campaign #InTheirWords; a series of short films involving recognised faces from the industry telling case studies of the beneficiaries the charity helps, in their own words. A very powerful new campaign that certainly made an impact on the night.
Alongside the networking and entertaining, a stunning catwalk hair show with the theme ‘Love and Strength’ was choreographed on the night. Guest artists included Nicky Clarke London for Wella Professionals, Brooks & Brooks for L’Oreal Professional, Tracey Devine-Smith for ASP, Andrew Smith Salons for Wonderful Life, Simon Tuckwell Hair for The Fellowship for British Hairdressing, Nicola Smyth Award Wphedinning Hair for Goldwell, Hairdotcom, and Anne Veck Salon.
Awards were also presented on the evening. The new Jeffery Bonn Fundraising Award, in recognition of long-standing charity treasurer and supporter Jeffery who passed away in 2018, was presented to Sharon Malcolm for her unwavering support and fundraising for the charity for many, many years. The President’s Award was presented to Karine Jackson for her dedication and support in championing the charity.
The ball also raised over £5000 on the night through pledges and interactive Heads & Tail game; guests were also serenaded by renowned industry crooner, David Jelley.
“The night was a great success and the buzz in the room was exactly what we needed to keep the charity front of mind” explains Philip Sharp,“a lot goes into organising these events but it’s worth it. There was a great balance of sharing our key messages, fundraising, and networking.”
“We really want this night to become a key fixture in the hairdresser calendar and grow the attendee numbers who attend the night, so not only do we raise funds but more people know why we exist and can come to the charity when they require help. We’re a small but important charity and thankful for everyone’s support in creating such a successful night,”concludes Samantha Grocutt.

Introducing the new 2019 Schwarzkopf Professional Young Artistic Team
Schwarzkopf Professional are ecstatic to announce their brand new, super talented 2019/20 Young Artistic Team! The judging day took place at Easton Regal Hairdressing in London where lots of young, talented hairdressers worked hard to impress the judges with their skill, technique and creativity. The judging panel included John Spanton, the Creative Colour Director of hairdressing group Trevor Sorbie, Hairdressers Journal Editor Laura Husband, and industry star and session stylist Peter Burkill. These six, super skilful hairdressers dazzled the judges with their detailed presenting skills, enthusiasm and creative flair.
They kick started their year as a team together with a three day team building workshop held at Billi Currie. The first day was spent with Catherine Adams where they were properly introduced to the rest of the team and given a summary of what exciting things they can expect from this year! Sophie Perfect from Options said, “I’m so glad we got the first day to introduce ourselves properly to each other, it was great to bond with the team and Schwarzkopf Professional. I feel so lucky have been given this amazing opportunity!”
Tuesday was a busier day for the team where they learnt presentation skills from none other than the extremely talented and knowledgeable Debbie G! Mitchell Gough from Hensmans Salons said, “We were given an insight into presenting ourselves to the media, on stage and to groups of people. It was brilliant and so eye opening! Debbie is such a great and inspirational lady to work with and the knowledge she has is endless!” The team also took part in several exercises throughout the day where they focused on presenting to each other and putting the skills they had learnt into practice.
Their final day was spent with Sarah Giblin from Schwarzkopf Professional who presented a social media seminar. After this, Sarah then took the team out and about in London to capture some images for their social media, keeping in mind what they had learnt. Molly Drummond from Hooker and Young said, “The social media day with Sarah was amazing! It gave us a better view of the way that the hairdressing industry is going and how current we have to be to keep up with the trend in the market that is social media. I feel since this day I have made a conscious effort to try and build my social media page and include better and more content.” Justine Weir from Tweedie & Marshall added: “The social media workshop was super beneficial to me. I’ve learnt how to promote myself through my social media pages which has already helped a lot! I can’t wait to go back down to London with the team and keep learning!”

F.A.M.E. Team Practise Presentation Skills with Simon Shaw
The third Fellowship for British Hairdressing F.A.M.E. Team day of 2019 was spent perfecting their presentation skills with Simon Shaw.
Presenting on stage can play a big part in any hairdresser’s career, which is why workshops to improve presentation skills are such a popular choice within the Fellowship.
For this year’s F.A.M.E. Team, it was none other than Fellowship Chairman, Simon Shaw, who generously gave up his time to help them enhance their skills and confidence in presenting on stage.
The team will be enjoying plenty of stage time over the next 12 months, both at Fellowship events and other industry occasions including Salon International.
Having the confidence to get on stage and showcase hair is one thing; talking through what you’re doing, explaining your ideas and inspirations, and keeping the audience engaged and inspired is another skill set entirely – and one that any good hairdresser needs to master.
For this workshop, Simon – alongside Project Leader, Nick Irwin – shared his immense insight and experience in stage work to help the team feel more prepared, more confident and more comfortable presenting.
Each member of the team came with a pre-prepared mood board, which they were tasked with presenting to the rest of the group. With feedback from Simon, and their peers, the team then adapted their presentations and delivered them once again – this time with even more confidence and expertise.
“It was really helpful to learn how to add structure to our
presentations,” says team member Alastair Jubbs of VAE Hair.“With Simon’s help, we learnt to deliver our looks and creativity with impact. Taking on board what I’ve learnt today, I’m now going to make sure that I plan, plan and plan some more prior to every presentation. I also want to make sure that I engage and excite the audience with everything I’m doing.”
After three sessions with the F.A.M.E. Team, the group of future hairdressing stars are now starting to feel more confident – and getting prepared for the exciting adventures they still have to come.
“After the session with Simon, I felt we were starting to understand each other at a deeper level,” says Alastair.“Today has made us stronger as a team and I can’t wait to present alongside the other three, and Nick – especially in Australia at Hair Expo.”

NEW SALON EXPANSION FOR Q HAIR AND BEAUTY
Q Hair and Beauty, the multi-award-winning salon in Chichester, has just celebrated the second birthday of its sister salon in the nearby market town of Midhurst and now it is leading the field in the rejuvenation of the West Sussex holiday resort of Bognor Regis.
The tremendous success of the Q brand in Midhurst, together with an equally sound performance from the bijou salon in Donnington, on the outskirts of Chichester, which opened in September 2018, has prompted owner Anthony Barnes-Smith and Director Dawn Lawrence Grant to go ahead with further expansion.
Plans are already well in place for the opening In July of a new Q salon in Bognor Regis, where the town is forging ahead with regeneration and is ripe for dynamic businesses to play a part in this.
“There is huge potential in Bognor which will be seeing a lot of very positive development in the near future, with more high-end businesses moving into the town. We very much want to play a pioneering role in the town’s rejuvenation and so we’re making it the focus for the next stage of our expansion,” said Dawn.

100 Years and One Big Party to Celebrate
On the 6th April, Brighouse’s most famous hairdressing family, the Taylors, who own Taylors & Co and Edward & Co, are throwing the party of the century to mark 100 years in business.
The event which will be held at the Brighouse Party Venue, will see over 140 local residents come together for an evening of dinner, dancing and reminiscing, as the two salons celebrate being in business and serving the barnets of Brighouse, for the past 100 years.
Commenting on the forthcoming evening, Jason Taylor of Taylors & Co. said, “There can’t be a family in Brighouse that hasn’t been through our doors at some point in the last century. Between us, we reckon we have delivered over 3 million haircuts, colours and restyles – and we’ve loved every minute of it.”
Continuing Gary of Edward & Co said, “The party is a chance for us to say thank you to Brighouse for supporting us since 1919; while also raising vital funds for two local charities that are very close to our hearts – Martins House for seriously ill children and the cancer ward at St James’ Hospital, Leeds. Tickets are selling out incredibly quickly, but if people would still like to show their support, we are also looking for donations for the evening raffle – so if there are any local businesses who’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from them. Our aim is to raise £2,000 for each charity, and knowing how generous the people of Brighouse are, we’re sure we can do this!”2019 marks 100 years in business for the Taylor family who own Taylors & Co and Edward & Co in Brighouse. The original family business, which was started by Edward Taylor in 1919, has grown over the century to provide training and employment to five generations of hairdressers. Today, Edward & Co is run by Gary & Heather Taylor with daughter, Annabelle, employed as a stylist; while Taylors & Co, the original family Salon, is owned by Jason Taylor.
Both salons pride themselves on delivering big city styles at local prices, with an emphasis on customer care and service. Alongside their traditional services, they also offer hair replacement pieces for clients who have experienced hair loss from cancer treatments, alopecia and illness.
Brothers Gary and Jason are award winning stylists, with both holding the title of World Men’s Hairdressing Champion (in different years). Gary collected the title of North Western Hairdresser of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards in 2012 and 2015; and is currently an Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional.

Fellowship Members Showcase Skills at Members’ Night
The first Members’ Night of 2019, saw Fellowship members showcase their skills live on stage.
The Fellowship’s regular Members’ Night events allows any member of the organisation to take their chance on stage and showcase what they can do.
The first Members’ Night of 2019 was hosted by Fellowship Chairman Simon Shaw and compère, Mark Creed, and saw teams take to the stage for four-minute presentations showcasing everything from barbering to colour work and session styling.
First on stage was the team from Bloggs Salons, who showed beautiful, organic, salon-friendly colours; these were real results for real clients. The Vault Hair & Spa team showcased their Anti Gravity collection, with gravity-defying updos and colours inspired by intergalactic formations. Casey Coleman from Chair Salons showcased “wonderfully weird” hair in his Neon Grey collection, which saw 80s shapes and textures reinvented with a modern perm and mullet coloured using a ‘magic eye’ technique. The Jason Liddiard team were inspired by the iconic Alexander McQueen collection, Plato’s Atlantis. Their Sirens collection featured oceanic-inspired texture and organic shapes. Mary Banasik from The Tier showcased an urban, apache-inspired collection with basketweave hair adorned with feathers and hoops. For Julian Dalrymple at The Sitting Room, rockabilly served as her inspiration with teddy-girl styling of quiffs, curls and updos. Closing the first section, former Project X team member Ben Brazzo of Malcolm Tina Barker presented textured styles finished with gold leaf.
The evening’s interview featured reigning Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Desmond Murray. The hairdressing polymath – who shoots, styles hair and creative directs – shared his inspirations and his career progression, from trainee hairdresser to award-winning hairdresser and photographer. “In this industry we need role models,” he said. “And that’s why the Fellowship is so amazing – it brings those role models up close and personal, with incredible access.”
The second half of the show was opened by Matthew Curtis for Great Lengths, who showcased three staple looks from his fashion week experience; a faux bob, a dramatic chignon and an accessorised ponytail. Next, the Ruffians team presented three of their trademark modern barber looks, showcasing razoring, disconnection and an undercut. Darcie, Oliver and Sam from Brooks & Brooks presented their own take on embellishment, with Swarovski chains and silver earrings woven into the hair and painterly colour through statement panels. The Gina Conway team presented their take on military, with braiding and texture in a palette of pastels – and this season’s must-have coral. Finally, the Hare and Bone team showcased diverse looks that epitomised their brand style, using classic editorial techniques including tonging, rolls and pin-frizz.
Closing the night, Mark Creed commented: “In an era of instant gratification, it’s easy to forget the hard work and techniques that go into being a brilliant hairstylist. Tonight has shown the wealth of hairdressing talent within the industry, and the skills and techniques that training and work in the salon can provide.”

F.A.M.E. Team Head Backstage at London Fashion Week
The 2019 F.A.M.E. Team spent their second session assisting their mentor, Nick Irwin, backstage at London Fashion Week.
One of the most exciting parts of being part of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s F.A.M.E. Team is getting involved in diverse opportunities, both within the industry and in the wider world of fashion and beauty.
The 2019 F.A.M.E. Team have got their year off to a flying start, after spending their second session assisting Team Leader, Nick Irwin, backstage at London Fashion Week.
All four members of the team joined Nick at the Paula Knorr show, which took place at the BFC Show Space. Working alongside Nick’s usual assistants, they created catwalk-ready looks for 12 models; each with their own individual style. The show was sponsored by Anti Collective products, the brand for which Nick is Global Creative Director.

“The look is inspired by Studio 54,” said Nick. “But it’s not a literal translation – it’s very modern and not retro. I wanted to channel the era, while still respecting each of the models’ specific hair texture. That meant it was a different look for each girl, but with the same feeling of an irregular, imperfect wave on each of them.”
The team worked tirelessly backstage on the look, using Anti’s Shine Spray, Texture Spray and Finishing Cream, as well as wide waving tongs to create a ‘buckle’ in the hair.
Reflecting on the experience, Alastair Jubbs from VAE Hair said: “Working with Nick on London Fashion Week was a real insight into how to approach brief. I loved working with the team creating stunning, individual looks for each model.
“It was really great working to such a high standard and seeing how the smallest details make such a difference. The collection was presented with live DJ and amazing metallic backdrop which gave it such a cool energy.”
