Mens Hairstyle Trends
Find out which men’s hairstyles are going to be hot on the high street this year, plus how to make your style work for you
Men’s hair stylist Matt Stark shares his expertise on having great hair in 2014.
Which men’s hairstyles should we expect to see on the high street in 2014?
2014 is all about strong tailored looks. Cuts will be pushed even further, incorporating more steps and hard lines into the classic quiffed looks we have seen over the past couple of seasons.
There will also be a resurgence of 90’s looks - think strong bowl like cuts with a modern indie feel. I also think curls will be big - I always say to clients embrace your curls rather than straighten them! We’re also seeing perming again, particularly for men.
Celebrity Hairstyle - which is your current favourite?
Harry Styles’ hair is great right now. His hair has everything - curl, style, shine, length.

I also like Alex Turner who has gone from a shy teen to rock god! His hair has enjoyed the same status, changing and evolving along the way; and David Beckham - well he’s just the ‘master of hair and style’!
What is your favourite men’s hair look right now?
I’m loving really long hair for men again. With the right grooming it can look edgy yet sophisticated. Long, clean, shiny, slightly feminine shoulder length hair - amazing - couple that with a slick suit and you’re good to go.
Products for men’s hair - which do it for you?
Products I like right now: Shu Uemura Shape Paste - great for texture and movement - and Moroccan Oil Hydrating Cream. Im also loving the many oils available, especially Argan Moisturizing Elixir from the Balmain Paris Styling Line - great for creating huge shine yet zero hold - especially for long looks and curls. For men that want hold there are also hair sprays specifically for men.
How can men move away from the traditional male hairstyles and adapt them from work to social?
If male clients are limited with their style I would try and bring in gradual changes - slightly longer or shorter - or change the location of a parting. Products are also great for introducing new styles without commitment. I sometimes use temporary extensions to demonstrate side fringes, quiffs, more length and it really works! For more adventurous clients colour is huge now!
If a client wants to stay more conservative for work - I would recommend a clean structured cut, but keep the length on top. Then go big time on product for the evening - shine, gloss, hold , quiff, colour - anything can be achieved now!
