The Sunburn
Blue Tit, the award-winning six-strong salon group in London, has revealed the secrets to creating its S/S16 SunBun colouring technique with a step-by-step guide.
Created by Harriet Muldoon, Head Colourist and Technical Educator at Blue Tit Salons and Academy, the technique, inspired by the 90s, was developed in response to the growing trend for multiple colours and allows a variety of spontaneous hues to be created with a stunning marbled, tie-dye effect.
The SunBun technique only works on very light hair, as you need to be able to see the different colours you are creating. If hair isn’t naturally or cosmetically light blonde, white or grey already, we start by pre-lightening or bleaching the hair, or lifting colour with a high-lift tint. At Blue Tit we usually do this by using the Davines Flamboyage colour service, which is an unprecedented colouring tool, for a new and revolutionary approach to colour. It is performed using special see-through meche strips that allow us to see where we want to place the colour.

Once the lightened base colour has been created, we then create the SunBun technique. The first stage is to segment the hair in to two or more sections, and to then tie these sections in to top-knots, which are then backcombed slightly.
2
Just two or three knots will produce a more subtle end result, with colour streaks appearing thicker and less spread out, while lots of smaller top-knots will produce a more extreme look and more of a tie-dye effect.
3
Once the hair has been tied in to top-knots, colour is applied. The more knots there are, the more colour you can add in. We generally go for a mix of raspberry pinks, bold purples, denim blues and mermaid greens, but clients can mix and match the shades.

Once you have added in the colours, gently massage through, before unwrapping the hair and washing and styling for a marvellous marble effect.
While it’s much more effective to see the variation in tones and different shades next to one other, so they can really pop, a softer look can also be created for a more natural effect. At Blue Tit we look outside of the salon for inspiration and are continually looking at ways in which we can offer unique services to clients across our six salons. The SunBun technique is perfect for the new season.
