Karen asks:
I’m 51, and heavy set. My hair is shoulder length, and kept in a ponytail most of the time. It’s all one length, has some greying, fine, w/dandruff, and oily scalp. I don’t take very good care of it. When I wash it, I use a dandruff shampoo, and then Infusium (sp) shampoo for fine/oily hair. I don’t use a conditioner, thinking that it adds to the greasiness. I have a wedding coming up next month where I will be standing in the line, and for pictures. I need help on what I can do, so that I don’t look like I do every day. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks for your email, all the symptoms you are describing are very common and things we see in the salon on an every day basis. In fact i myself am a victim of fine hair with oily roots so i more than appreciate how difficult this hairtype can be to manage particularly when the weather is not great outside.

The best advice i can give, is to go to the top salon in your area and have consultation with the best stylist. Consultations are usually free of charge and you can pick their brains as to what colour and style they think will suit your hair and skin tone.

Without seeing your hair i can offer some general advice that will work for most people with the hair problems you mentioned. Firstly, I would suggest having a gloss colour. A gloss colour is a quasi permanent colour which will give a translucent coverage to your grey hair, making them less obvious and adding to the rest of your hair body and shine. The benefit of this type of colour over a permanent tint is the up keep, permanent tint covers grey hair better but it sounds to me that you are a low maintenance kind of girl and getting a gloss done will densify the hair without giving a definite regrowth as it fades so you can have it done when you have special things coming up, such as weddings.

My second tip would be to have a fringe, this doesn’t mean having a school girl style there are many different types of fringe, one for almost every hairtype and face shape in fact. A long side fringe will add softness when you are wearing the hair up in a ponytail everyday and will slim the face when you wear your hair down on a night out.

My best tip for solving every day greasiness is to let the shampoo do the work, dont massage or vigourously scrub the scalp as you are encouraging more sebum. I recommend kerastase bain clarifant as an excellent detox shampoo to be used alongside your anti-dandruff products. You are right not to use conditioner on the roots as the natural sebum will be keeping that area healthy but then this doesnt tend to travel to the ends. Using a light conditioner like kerstase ciment anti usure will make sure the hair is detangled and easier to comb.

For styles on the wedding day i would look to the red carpet, jennifer anniston and sandra bullock are great examples of how fine shoulder length hair can be glamourous and full of life. i recommend getting a professional blowdry on the morning of the wedding as well, your stylist should have all the products and tools needed to give a photo finish look that lasts the whole day.

I hope this helps and if you are in the North West come in and see us and I can go through what shape and styles i think would work specifically for you.

Kind Regards

Barbara

Ashling asks:
Went for a trial with the hairdresser for wedding and she put some short layers in the front of my hair to suit the particular style we were trying out. Hated the style and now I have short layers at the front of my hair. I have long enough hair but I am worried now my choice will be limited regards upstyles with the front of my hair having short layers. I have a very high forehead and thought by letting pieces of hair down it would take from this. The wedding is 10 weeks away. Please give me advise I am so upset but don’t want to go back to my stylist if it will be fine. As she is really nice and was only following the picture I showed her. I just didn’t realise that the picture had layers at the front. A very upset and worried bride would be delighted to hear from somebody.

Don’t panic. Your hairdresser sounds nice so maybe talk to her about getting some temporary hair extensions for the front of your hair. Do some research on styles, put them on a file and see if it realistically they can be achieved. Keep an open mind and all will be fine. Enjoy your day

Eileen asks:
The last time I dyed my hair was about 9 weeks ago and I dyed it like a dark auburn. It has lightened over the weeks. I would love to go back to my hair which was brown with blonde highlights. I loved it as it was like that for my wedding 7 years ago. Is it possible or will the highlights turn orange.

Pierre AlexandreAnswered By:

My advice would be to pre-lighten the highlights to a base 7 or 8 they will go to an orange/ yellow shade then I would apply a toner to the highlights. I would use 8.3 or 8.31 we use L’Oreal or any other colouring make, the numbers stay the same more or less, depending on the colour of the highlights, this would make them a really nice caramel shade which looks amazing with brown hair.

Janani asks:
I am getting married in June. Have a round chubby face with thin shoulder level black hair. Can you please suggest a suitable hair style for me.

Rachel BakerAnswered By:

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. How exciting! With a round shaped face I would suggest long layers starting at your jaw, as shorter layers can potentially emphasise the roundness of your face. Grow your hair longer and put large rollers in the morning of your wedding to give real volume to your hair on your special day.

Sama asks:
I’m about to get married and I’m asking you to help me find the perfect hair style for my wedding. I have a small oval face, big eyes, long nose, not big not small mouth, my chin and forehead have no distinctive marks " I can’t tell what they look like!" anyway everybody sees me notices my small oval long face and my long nose. Can you please help me... thanks.

Sounds like something soft and gentle around your face would be lovely- nothing too scrapped back. Difficult to comment without seeing you but have some trials with your stylist, show them the vibe of your dress and I am sure they will design something lovely just for you.

Rachel Bowery asks:
I have recently gone mobile and want to specialise in wedding hair, can you recommend a good course to add to my portfolio without breaking the bank? I love hair up!

Hair up is essential to learn and a great asset to your skills. I am doing a hair up course for REDKEN in London soon so check out their website for dates!

Katrina asks:
For my wedding I would like ankle length curly auburn hair. My hair is currently shoulder length. Do you know any salons who can do this and the cost? As I cannot find any so far!

Charlotte MurrayAnswered By:
Charlotte Murray
Wow Katrina! Make sure you let your husband to be know in advance! I like a challenge. You need to find a hairdresser that can do good hair extensions. Colour your own hair to the colour desired then approach either PAK hair world or Hairaisers to find hair the length you need it. Or, you could get a long wig and attach hair extensions to that. As far as I know the longest weft you can get is 26 inches but I could be wrong. As far as salon recommendation I don’t know where you live so that makes it too hard. Have fun! And good luck.

Julie asks:
Can you suggest a nice style for my wedding day I have short layered hair with a fringe top layers fall to the left?

Have it blow dried really well and add a fabulous fascinator - something really sparkly that clasps your head.

Enjoy

Jayne asks:
I wore a lovely hat to a friends wedding and after taking it off my hair was as flat as a pancake, even my fringe was ’flat’ it looked awful - what can I do the next time?

Charlotte MurrayAnswered By:
Charlotte Murray
Hmmm! It is a problem. You could pin curl your hair underneath the hat which you can shake out once you take it off or pile your hair up under it to stop it being flat.

Gemma asks:
I am getting married next May and don’t know what to do with my very fine hair I was thinking of getting extensions but had them before and as my hair is so fine you could see the glue through my hair, and to put my hair up I don’t have enough hair to get a fab up do can you help please as I have no idea what to do, I also have a veil and small tiara.

Charlotte MurrayAnswered By:
Charlotte Murray
Congrats on getting married. Ok, a few ideas...

If you are fair haired you could go a bit darker to give the illusion your hair is thicker. Getting some movement and texture in the hair is helpful. Be careful that your veil and tiara aren’t too heavy.

Have a few trials to make sure you feel confident with your hairdresser and take pictures. If it is loosely put up then the hair piece can be introduced into the top and blended in.

Good luck!
