Kate Middleton and Prince William
Prince William carried his late mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring around in his back pack while on holiday, before finding the right moment/ courage to ask Kate Middleton to marry him. The famous ring is an 18-carat oval sapphire, surrounded by 14 white diamonds, it was made by the crown jewellers Garrard and cost Prince Charles £30,000 in 1981 (worth £85,700 in 2011). Unusually for the Royal Family, the ring was not unique and was featured in Garrard’s jewellery collection at the time.
