| I've
never really experienced the joys
of the 'cocktail world' until recently. I'm a bit of a bore when it comes to choosing
an alcoholic drink - a sweet sherry or half a lager seem to be a racy as I get.
So when a friend invited me to her cocktail party over Christmas I was worried.
Would there be anything I recognised or could even pronounce? I needn't have worried.
Within half an hour I was moving up from a Damson Dash, (her own speciality involving
some very potent home brew!) To a Sea Breeze, rounding off my new favourite Cosmopolitan.

I thought the name sounded good so in I plunged and it was absolutely delicious.
I'm not sure I should have tried so many different cocktails on my first outing
but I had a really good time (I think?), even if I did feel slightly disorientated
the next day.
To make a wonderful Cosmopolitan simply fill a tall
glass with ice, pour on 25 ml of Cointreau, 25ml vodka, 60ml CRANBERRY JUICE and
a squeeze of lime. Shake well, strain and serve in a Martini glass with
flamed orange peel- and don't forget the umbrella! |

We
all know that healthy eating, regular exercise and not polluting our bodies
with too much alcohol and cigarette smoke helps to keep us in shape physically
and can greatly aid our ability to fight illness. And whilst we also know that
even those who are health conscious and fit can be unlucky enough to get life-threatening
diseases, there are some surprising facts that can greatly reduce our chances
of falling prey to a whole host of cancers. Did
you know that:- Eating fish 3 times
a week can cut the risk of stomach cancer by 30%.
Wearing lipstick outdoors reduces the development of lip cancer by 50%.
Drinking plenty of water daily reduces the risk
of cancer of the bladder by 50%.
Stopping smoking reduces the risk of lung cancer by a huge 90%!
Green vegetables and orange fruit appear to attack the HPV virus that's thought
to be a cause of cervical cancer.
Just eating breakfast reduces the risk of oesophageal cancer by 20% according
to studies at University of Aberdeen. If you needed some motivation
to stick to a healthier eating plan this New Year, we think these figures may
help. |

| Is
your child benefiting
from the best brain fodder? "Children who eat an optimum range of nutrients have
improved IQ, concentration and memory", says Judith Wills, author of Children's
Food Bible (Collins £17.99) "They need regular, balanced meals with protein, a
little fat and good quality carbohydrate - including a healthy breakfast. | The
digestive system converts these nutrients into a steady supply of glucose - the
only energy source used by the brain. A good diet during exams can make the difference
between a pass and a fail". |
