Father left the family in 1966 and Keanu lived in New York, Australia and Toronto with his mother and her next three husbands.
Education: Went to four high schools before dropping out at 17 including De La Salle College and Second City workshop, Toronto.
Previous jobs: Sharpening ice skates in Toronto.
Lives: In the Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.
Love life: Dogged by rumours that he is gay because he keeps his love life private. He has, however, dated Jennifer Syme - former assistant to David Lynch. Jennifer and Keanu's baby was stillborn on Christmas Eve 1999. He is currently linked to British wild child Amanda de Cadenet.
Hobbies: Playing bass in the band Dogstar, he often flies band members out to rehearse when on location. Plays goalie for an ice-hockey team. Also very much into motorbikes but has suffered two bad crashes.
Interesting fact: Keanu means "wet day in Milton Keynes" in Hawaiian. Actually we lied. It means "cool breeze over the mountains".
