Cheryl Cole

It hit the papers, magazines and fashion columns this week as Cheryl home-coloured her hair a shade of warm red. As well as a new shade the style icon also opted for gorgeous long extensions, perfectly plaited into a fishtail design. This style is simple but stunning and works great with hair that's got contrasting colours. Here's how to copy Ms Cole:

• If you have long or short hair, this style can be worn at work, or glam it up for a night out - just clip in your extensions!

• To gain the height in this style, after washing, conditioning and applying heat protection product (e.g. ghd Thermal Protector Spray), blow dry your hair by tilting your head upside down.

• This gives a great lift at the roots without needing to spend time sectioning and using rounded brushes.

• To ensure your hair isn't flyaway, once you've finished drying, spray with a smoothing product (e.g. Neal and Wolf Silk Smoothing Balm) or a light mist of hairspray.

• Smooth it with your hands to the nape of your neck. It's up to you if you want the plait on the side or central. To get an extra lift, lightly back comb at the crown and cilp up (for a nice beehive effect - perfect if you dressing up)

• The fishtail (or herringbone) is easy to do, if you're a first timer, just practice once or twice in the mirror. (An alternative to this is a tight plait, then get a tail comb and pull section out to give it the messy look)

• If you are a first time 'fisher', it's best to secure your pontytail to the side.

• Divide your pontytail in to two sections. Take a smaller section from underneath one side and cross it over the other.

• While holding the hair securely with your thumb, allow the remaining side of your hand to be free and then take the same size small section from underneath the other side.

• It's simple. Just repeat these two steps until you reach the bottom. Be careful if you have layers, it can make it more difficult.

• When you reach the bottom, secure with a band. You can either use the clear 'no snags' ones or ones with hair jewels.
