It's no secret that Lisa Shepherd loves colour. As a three time winner of the British Hairdressing Awards Colourist of the Year and past British Hairdresser of the Year, she is also a woman that always returns to sun kissed colour landscape of blonde.

The road to blonde ambition

Following in Katie Perry and Cheryl Cole's footsteps

"Complete colour transformations are always tricky and it's a path that should only be undertaken in partnership with your professional hairdresser. Going fro dark to blonde is all about the journey and embracing and enhancing every step along the way. Katy Perry is a fabulous example. Her raven tresses are a new shade of rich copper, a half way house to blonde. Bleaching hair lifts pigment from the core and the red pigment in your hair is the most resistant. Bleach can be damaging and to preserve the health of the hair you should lift the pigment in stages over 4 week periods, while packing in lots of moisture with treatments. Katy's glossy copper shows she has made the right choice.

Cheryl Cole is taking a slightly longer route round to big up her blonde by losing length and volume in the cut and lifting the hair in sections while re-colouring with honeys and golds. This look is particularly on trend because she can achieve darker under sections and contrast through the top. With Katy's stand out style she can carry off any statement look, but with Cheryl's gorgeous dark eyes and skin tone she should keep cooler base tones to optimise her style. In reality, we do judge a book by it's cover so both girls should expect to make a different first impression with their new hair colour. Blondes are always eye catching and depending on the type, create a variety of impressions…everything from sweet and innocent to outspoken man eater, the closer you get to platinum. I bet I know which of these two girls will sit at either end of that spectrum!

Colour treated and bleached hair is thirsty hair and needs a lot of TLC. A good colour protect shampoo and conditioner, a weekly moisturising pack and UV protect spray for the summer sun. It's also a good idea to wear a swimming hat in the pool and a sun hat in the sun to shield the hair from environmental damage. Blonde hair will also require 4 weekly route retouches and that can be tough on scalps. A good hairdresser will never use a peroxide formula that cannot be tolerated safely by the clients scalp, but it's also a good idea not to wash your hair for two days before you have a colour treatment. The natural oils on the scalp offer great protection against damage. Post colour, a soothing and healing scalp serum or treatment will soon allow the skin of the scalp to settle. Changing your hair colour is a fun and fabulous way to play with your personal style. So be empowered by Cheryl and Katy and seize your blonde moment soon!"
