Salon Time
WEEK in, week out, there’s always someone walking down the streets, out shopping, or a celebrity of some sort who makes me do a double-take at their hair. We have dozens of hair magazines and websites to get great material and ideas for our latest salon visit.
Whether you’ve sported the same style for years or you’re a chameleon client who loves the latest and greatest trend it’s always wise to visit your stylist with ‘virgin’ hair. What I mean by that is always make sure your hair is clean and at its most natural. A stylist can gauge a lot from root direction, the style of your hair and its texture. All this just helps create the best style for your look. If you have curly, wavy or frizzy hair – don’t be tempted to straighten it before you go – no matter how much you look like orphan Annie – it’s worth it for the stylist to see your hair at its most natural, so grab a hat!
Also, be mindful of what you wear. As a stylist I like to know everything about a new client, personality, individual style, what job they do, hobbies – it all works into having a cut and finish which you will love and which will suit you.
Pictures can be helpful if you have difficulty in getting across what style you’re looking for but be realistic. Sometimes you can’t pull off a Cheryl Cole without the two hours she’s spent in a salon having extensions etc. if you have very fine, fly away tresses. But, your stylist can work to give you a cut that will give your hair the appearance of thickness in a style that suits you.
Don’t be shy! If your stylist does suggest something and you hate it – say so. Don’t sit there and get something done that you’ll end up washing out or going somewhere else to get done. That’s the beauty of a full and proper consultation – it’s what you’re paying for and unfortunately hairdressers aren’t mind readers! To get the best out of your salon, you need to get the foundations right.
