The Hair Chalking How to Guide
Hair chalking has become one of the most popular styles, and is a fun and fabulous way for kids, teens and adults to add a bit of whimsy to a style for a night. Celebs including Lauren Conrad, Nikki Minaj, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne and Rachel McAdams have all given this temp trend a go, and with some pretty amazing results. Here's Nikki looking rainbow fabulous.
Want to get this look at home? Well, the great news is that it couldn't be easier! Here's a primer on how to get started. The fun of this style is that you can really customize it to however you want to look and that it's super easy to do. No fancy tools required, no expert knowledge. You don't even need to be all that coordinated.
What you'll need
Some companies sell hair chalking kits, which you can definitely use to copy this style. You can also do it yourself using basic art store supplies to save cash. Have on hand:
•Spray bottle
•Hair chalking kit or non-oil chalk pastels
•Hair dryer
•Curling or flat iron
•Hair spray
•Latex gloves
•Old tee shirt
How to get chalking
Start with a small section of hair, a little less than you would put in a curling iron. Tie a hair elastic around the hair to isolate it, and spritz the hair with your spray bottle, just enough to dampen it. With your chalk in hand, begin at the roots -- or the highest point you plan to work -- and work down to the end. Work in short downward strokes to paint the colour onto you hair. You don't have to use the same colour the whole way down, so feel free to switch it up if you want to. You also don't have to paint from roots to end if you want an ombre effect. If the colour isn't vibrant enough, spray your hair a bit more and continue to paint pigment onto the hair. Stop when the desired colour is achieved. Dry the hair, either naturally or using a blow dryer. Definitely keep your dryer on low since too much air can blow the chalk off your mane. Once you finish chalking, set the color with the heat of a flat or curling iron. Finish with a little bit of hairspray and you're done!

Tips
Work with gloves on to keep your fingers clean. As you switch chalk colours, replace your gloves to keep the colours pure. If you have dark hair, neutralize it first with white chalk then build your gorgeous colour on top of the white neutral base. Since you used chalk, the colour will only last a few days, basically until you wash it out. Some of it may rub off on your pillowcase. If you have blonde hair, use clarifying shampoo to wash out the colour. Since the style is temporary, you can experiment and play all you want. Really have fun and try it out!
