We interviewed Paul Ferguson from Hooker & Young
What was your inspiration for the salon?
We wanted the salon to have a timeless and elegant feel. Keeping within the luxurious Hooker & Young brand and also complimenting the stone built cottage that it occupies, we have installed soft lighting with opulent shaded wall lights and a huge welcoming leather Chesterfield sofa creates the perfect salon environment. Our retail units were inspired by Jo Malone boutiques and our separate Hair Spa room with delicate lighting has a spa-like atmosphere with reclining massage chairs candles and chilled out music.
Who is your role model?
This may sound clichéd but Gary and Michael are my role models. To balance a heavy artistic schedule, extensive international travel to present shows and seminars, while running an extremely successful group of salons is something that truly deserves commending. And yet they still find time to have fun.
Best moment? (customer base/ award winning/ promotion/ messages/recommendation)?
My best moment has to be opening my first salon. It’s been a lifelong ambition of mine to do this and in June this year it finally happened. I’ve had the most amazing six months and the salon has so far exceeded our expectations. I’m so excited for the next six months.
Funniest hairdressing moment?
Best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is ’fail to prepare....prepare to fail.’ This is very true and I have learnt the hard way in the past! Another great piece of advice is an Alan Austin-Smith classic.... ’Where you put your focus, is where you get your goals.’. If certain areas of your life aren’t going the way you want then revisit this sentence. It could be the reason!
Whats the most important quality you look for in someone joining your team?
The most important quality in someone joining our team is a great attitude, a willingness to learn and enthusiasm. These are things that can never be taught!!
What would you like to be known for?
I would love to be known for as someone who worked hard, was successful and in turn helped others along the way. Watching our team member’s achieving their goals is immensely satisfying.
What couldn't you live without?
I couldn’t live without good friends and a good pub lunch on a Sunday afternoon!!! We try to all make it happen as often as possible!
