HEAVENLY HAIR
If your biggest desire is sleek, shiny hair, heres how to mak eyour wish come true. First, book into a hairdressers for a trim. Even if you have one-length hair or you are growing it, just get the ends neatened up - it will make you look more groomed. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to towel dried hair. Warmth enhances the conditioning power, so wear a shower cap or wrap your hair in cling film while it gets to work. Leave it on for at least 10 mins. If your hair shades looking dull and you cannot afford a salon, use one of the reputable brands at home, sticking to a shade near to your own for a natural, healthy effect. Semi-permanent vegetable dyes are great for adding gloss and bringing out your natural tones. If you are blonde go for honey, caramel or biscuit shades. Brunetts should try nutty, chocolate or toffee shades and readheads, coppers or chestnut tones.

Q: My cuticles are ragged and store, even though I smother them with cream. How can I rescue them.

A: Keep going with the handcream, making sure you massage it into your cuticles gently but thoroughly, especially after washing your hands. Never pull or cut cuticles yourself - you will need help from a professional manicurist. The manicurist should soften the cuticles and gently push them back. For a daily treat, use a branded cticle cream or plain old olive oil. You can also try heating a little olive oil for 45 seconds in the microwave. Test temperature, then soak the fingers in the liquid until it cools. Do this for three days running and cuticles should benefit considerably.

FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS!
Keeping your eyes bright and healthy will help you keep that sparkling youthful look and is easier than you think by including some simple ingredients in your diet.

  • Carrots are rich in betacarotene which the body converts into Vitamin A, a vital nutrient for healthy eyesight and night vision. Other good sources are orange - coloured fruits, egg yolk, butter and cheese.
  • Fruit and veg rich in Vitamin C help prevent cataracts and keep eyes free from infection. Good sources include peppers, citrus fruit, broccolli and brussel sprouts.
  • Avocados and walnuts are good sources of Vitamin E, another essential eye nutrient. This has an added bonus of being great for skin too!
  • Tea, onions and red wine all contain the eye friendly anti-oxidant quercetin.
  • Oily fish provides plenthy of Omega - 3 fatty acids. Without these eyes can become red and gritty and look tired.
DID YOU KNOW
80% of breast cancer cases in the UK occur in women over 50? Alarmingly, nearly three quarters of women this age are unaware of the risk, says a recent survey by Breast Cancer Care. Nor do they know that risk increases with age. Cherie Booth (Mrs Tony Blair) is patron of the charity and speaks passionately about the subject. Having lost an aunt to breast cancer it is a topic close to her heart.

Getting to recognise changes in appearance and habit is vital and practice nurses can help with self-examination methods.

The good news is earlier diagnosis and far better treatment means UK survival rates have increased in recent year. If you require further info you can call Breast Cancer Helpline on 0808 800 6000.
