DID YOU KNOW?

That storing vitamins and medications in the bathroom cabinet is not a good idea according to recent studies.
They reveal high heat and humidity levels in many bathrooms can break down properties in certain medications, causing them to lose some of their effectiveness. Best to keep them in a cool, dark cupboard instead, where temperatures do not get too high.

DARE WE SAY 'NITS'?

These days, thank goodness, there is far less stigma attached to the problem of headlice. In the good old days, heads were shaved, children sent home from school and the scalp washed in some vile-smelling chemical solution that would wipe out an entire army let alone an attack of nits. Fortunately, those methods have changed. Unfortunately though, schools are increasingly plagued with almost permanent headlice infestation. It seems that instead of regular outbreaks of nits, their presence is far more permanent than intermittent. These days much of children's learning is conducted in groups around large tables rather than two by two desks, thus encouraging the spread. Contrary to popular belief headlice do not 'fly' from head to head, they crawl from one head to another.

Whilst we can't stop our children's head coming into contact with others, there are products available to help treat and prevent constant infestations.

The best one we can source is Nice 'n' Clear by natural Science. Research has shown that it eradicates 100% of lice and 99.8% of eggs. This was actually a far higher score than some of the more commercially advertised brands, which only claimed to reduce 95% of lice and eggs. Nice 'n' Clear is an easy to use lotion which works quickly and effectively and the good news is it also acts as a repellent when rubbed into dry hair twice weekly.

KEEP IT HANDY

Before winter arrives and we start to need our gloves, it's good idea to get hands in top shape to withstand the colder months ahead. Also, nail growth will slow down in the winter so keep them in tip-top condition with a good handcream.

Here are our top 3:-

l Cutex Intensive Treatment Hand and Nail Cream smoothes and conditions skin and cuticles. It also brightens skin and is light and quickly absorbed, and all at a bargain price.

l My personal favourite beauty guru Liz Earle has a wonderfully fragranced hand cream, Hand Repair. Very creamy, yet easily absorbed its packed full of essential oils, Vitamin E and BETACOTENE. With camomile, lavender and hops to soothe and echinacea and PANTHENOL to strengthen, rough hands are a thing of the past.

l Oil of Olay Total Effects Hand Treatment promises to reverse the various signs of ageing, eliminating blotches whilst softening and brightening. Packed full of good ingredients, including Vitamin E and PANTHENOL, it performs as well as their range of anti-ageing face products.

ON-THE-SPOT!
Spot treatments have come along way from the days of highly astringent, drying, alcohol-loaded toners and harsh face washes. The result of these was a stripped dry skin, which would then panic and produce even more sebum to compensate.

These days the approach is far less harsh yet far more effective. To avoid breakouts in the first place, skin must be kept scrupulously clean without being stripped of its essential protective layers. Keep dead skin cells sloughed off on a daily basis to avoid blocked pores and encourage cell renewal. My very, very favourite cleanser for the job is by far Liz Earles Cleanse and Polish, which gently removes not only all traces of make-up but lifts dead skin cells effectively without dryness.

Even though you may be prone to a more oily skin please do not think you can skip moisturiser. There are many good brands on the market which are especially designed for oily skins - they will hydrate without adding grease or shine, and all skins need hydration.

For a particularly nasty breakout, much better to use a plant-based product than pure chemicals. Aloe Vera is excellent at repairing skin problems, if kept in the fridge it will instantly cool an inflamed area, reducing redness and swelling. The anti-septic qualities of tea-tree can very quickly reduce yellow or infected spots and kill bacteria in the surrounding area.

LOVELY LIP - TIPS
Y Rub lips gently with Vaseline for a minute to stimulate blood flow and increase colour depth. Blot before adding sheer lipstick.

Y Always consider your overall look. Heavier eye make-ups will usually need the balance of a fuller-coloured lipstick. If a quick coat of mascara is your usual look then slick lips with a sheer or pale colour for a 'natural' style.

Y The skin around the lips is delicate, so protect all summer with sunscreen lip saver and all winter with a good quality lip balm.

Y To narrow a wide mouth, concentrate the colour in the centre of the lips and grade out just before the outer edges. Contrary to this, to make a small mouth appear fuller keep to pale, glossy colours which will not accentuate the edges of the mouth too sharply.

Y For black skins, full-on reds can look over the top so choose a more muted tone like Ruby or Wine - more subtle and attractive than scarlet or poppy shades.

Y For a natural look, use the same blush-stick for cheeks and lips, adding a thin coat or gloss over lip area.
