Most of us take care of the skin on our faces but some of us are guilty of neglecting the skin on our body, especially at this time of year. We’re covered from head to toe most of the time in winter and it’s easy to forget our body skin. But if you want to get a head start with beautiful skin for summer, now is a good time to start. The two things most essential to good skincare for the body are exfoliation and moisture. In order for any body cream to work effectively the layers of dead skin must be sloughed off efficiently. If you are a shower person then this is easy – many shower gels now contain gentle exfoliators that can be used on a daily basis and really do help to keep skin smooth. Follow up your shower with a body lotion, preferably each day but certainly at least twice a week.

If you tend to take a bath rather than a shower then you could use a gel with built in exfoliator if you don’t want to take the longer route of layering the body before you bathe. Look for gels that have fine particles to avoid sitting in a bath of ‘grit’. Exfoliating soaps are also a good idea as they are quick and offer great value for money.

There are many different types of body lotion on the market but as with most things, you get what you pay for. Cheaper body products tend to be ‘runny’ and do not have much effect at locking in moisture. But there are some very good body products available that won’t break the bank as well as more comprehensive products that really will give a better result.

L’Occitane Olive Soap

Containing exfoliating particles and rich in olive oil this soap will gently exfoliate on a daily basis when used in the shower. Follow up with Olive Body Moisturiser, a fabulously creamy lotion that really lasts on the skin and smells divine.

Liz Earle Hip & Thigh Gel

This gorgeous smelling gel will really stimulate sluggish areas such as ‘lumpy’ thighs and backs of arms. Use alone for toning up or use under a body crème for moisturizing benefits.

Decleor Prolagene Gel

Fantastic at toning slackened skin and an excellent body moisturizer for those who dislike creams or who have an oily/spotty skin and do not wish to add oils. It sinks straight into the skin allowing you to dress immediately. Can also be used under a body cream for toning prior to moisturising.
