We
all suffering freezing temperatures
at the moment and at this time of year it's
extremely important to protect your skin
from the elements.
The biting winds can really play havoc with
your skin, causing dry, sore patches, chapped
lips and sore eyes.
But equally, central heating really dehydrates
the skin quickly, causing lines and wrinkles
to become more pronounced. Protect yourself
on a daily basis with a good quality moisturiser.
Even if you're used to grabbing the nearest
jar in the supermarket, this really is the
time of year to up your game by using good
quality ingredients.
Decleors Hydra Floral will slowly drip feed
the skin throughout the day and is also
super gentle and will not sting on dry,
sore patches. Liz Earles Skin Repair will
suit all skin types and is packed full of
natural botanical ingredients which will
sink into the skin and give day long protection
without greasiness.
Mature skins may like to add in a serum
underneath moisturiser for extra protection.
Serums boost the performance of your moisturiser
and help to lock essential moisture in.
If you're worried that they could be greasy
or oily on the skin then look for a plant-oil
based product as they will harmonise with
the skin better.
Again both Liz Earle and Decleor offer beautiful
skin serums in the range. Do be wary of
anti-ageing products at this time of year
as they can be really drying, especially
around the delicate eye area. Look out for
products containing shea butter, cocoa butter
or olive oil extract as these will really
help with dehydration and protection against
the elements.
Most of us
also find that this time of year
can really take its toll on our hair. Like
skin, hair can really loose moisture in
winter causing dull, straw like appearance
and problems with tangling and breakage.
Replace the moisture with a moisture rich
shampoo and conditioner such as Aussie 3
Minute Miracle. All the products in the
Aussie range target dry, brittle and damaged
hair and have a gorgeous aroma. The Mega
Moist Shampoo will not strip the hair and
there is a comprehensive choice of fabulous
conditioners so there is bound to be one
that suits.
Always use your protection products if your
are an avid heat styling fan as straighteners
and curling wands can dry hair our severely
if you don't protect, especially if used
on a daily basis. Try a leave-in conditioner,
again Aussie's leave-in is beautiful, especially
on long hair as it will be the length which
will particularly suffer just now. Believe
it or not home-made recipes are amongst
the best remedies for dry hair, even with
all the technology around. Use a small amount
of almond oil, olive oil or castor oil warmed
between your palms and apply to lengths
of hair. Wrap a towel around your head for
about an hour before washing, hair will
really benefit from the extra moisture and
be protected during the washing process.
Don't wet the hair before applying your
shampoo though, just massage a small amount
of shampoo through the ends then add the
water or you could find the oil difficult
to remove. Almond oil works particularly
well and has a more pleasant fragrance then
olive or castor.
In actual fact, these three simple oils
are wonderful to use on the skin too before
bathing just as the Romans did as they will
both moisturise and lift dead skin cells.
(Be careful using oils in the shower as
they can obviously cause to slip). If you're
not into home-made approach then hot-oil
conditioners are available on the High Street
and hair will benefit from a weekly treat.
And if you don't want to show your age then
you absolutely must take care of your hands
in winter. Hands are dead giveaways for
the signs of ageing and soon become parched
in cold weather . The best protection you
can get is a pair of gloves, both for the
hands and nails, but do treat your hands
to a quality hand cream even if you only
apply at night. If you're not keen on greasy
hand creams, then avoid the ones with glycerin,
which will protect the skin but can feel
sticky. Again look for plant or nut oils
which will sink into the skin far easier.
And don't leave the house without your lipstick!
It really is one of the best protections
for lips in chilly weather - choose a moisture
rich variety at this time of year, it will
protect and soothe the lips better than
a chap-stick which can often make dry lips
worse believe it or not, especially cheaper
end varieties. Invest in a really good lip
cream if dry lips are a problem for you
as you use such tiny amounts the investment
will really be worth it.
