At this time of year it is absolutely vital to wear good quality sun protection on a daily basis.

We Britain's have a poor record when it comes to sun cream application, although figures show we are becoming increasingly aware in recent years.

Most of us use sun creams on holiday but are a little forgetful when it comes to days out in this country.

Many are guilty of applying once in the morning and expecting it to do its job all day long or only doing the 'obvious' areas.

This year has seen a huge increase in public awareness messages about the links between sun damage and skin cancer and a wealth of information is available at most good chemists.

Improvements in the sun creams available have been tremendous and one of the most effective on the market is the Ultrasun range. Untrasun is an excellent quality once-a-day product that has revolutionized the way we use sun cream.

Ultrason products allow you to apply once a day and it continues to protect for the whole day, even in and out of water. It has high protection factors that block both UVA and UVB rays and is suitable for very sensitive skins. It's a superb product to protect children with as once they've applied they can forget about it for the whole day.
It's also good at reducing prickly heat symptoms and contains no artificial fragrances or fats.

Most of the products are applied from an easy, mess-free pump dispenser and there's even a gel formula that is completely clear and matt for those who dislike creams (Men often prefer this as its less messy on hair parts).

Although Ultrasun is on the expensive side, it really does do what it says on the package and as it's only used once a day, can work out comparatively economic. Whatever sun protection you choose, do remember that it's never advisable to spend overly long in full sunlight.

Children are especially prone to heat stroke and dehydration and should certainly be encouraged to play in the shade as much as possible, and to increase their fluid intake dramatically during hot weather.

Never, ever allow children to play in full sun without the protection of clothing, a simple cotton t-shirt can offer a child a large amount of protection, especially when swimming in the sea, where the suns rays can cause really severe and unnecessary burning.

Sunburn in children is really avoidable if the correct measures are taken - using a once a day product like Ultrasun will offer superb protection without interrupting their playtime. Pop a hat on them if you can and make sure they take plenty of sun 'breaks'.

If your legs are feeling achey and tired in this weather try to elevate your feet at any opportunity you get. If you are on your feet all day at work, do try to 'put your feet up' in an evening by using a footstool whilst watching t.v., Try putting your feet into a really cool bowl of water for a long soak, at the same time wrap cool wet towels around the ankle and lower calf area - this can reduce fluid retention and really ease aching muscles.

If you get a chance, lie on the floor with your legs elevated up the wall and your bottom tucked almost upto the skirting board. Hold this elevation for 5-10 minutes if you can - you'll feel the benefit when you sit up. Rubbing an arnica gel or cooling alo vera
gel all around the calf area can really help and to help keep feet cool this summer, try a foot spray such as Scholl-Deo Active Fresh which will also help stop foot odour.

Aching legs in hot weather can also indicate a salt deficiency, so if the ache turns to pain or you have recurring cramp, talk to your GP about increasing your salt intake safely.
