We all know that too much salt is bad for us, with an overwhelming amount of evidence linking its use with high blood pressure and heart disease.

Although we do need sodium in our diet a very small amount is sufficient. Here are some facts to take note of:

Only around 15 percent of our intake comes from what we add to our food at the table. A huge amount is consumed in processed foods such as soups, crisps and even cornflakes!
Many additives contain sodium - watch out for monosodium glutamate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium saccharin. It is the sodium part of salt which is bad for us.

There are low- sodium salt products on the market which can help to wean you off full sodium salt, hopefully on the way to giving it up.

Sea salt, although it does contain traces of some minerals that you don't find in regular salt, is in no way a better choice for health benefits.
Salt consumption has fallen in Finland by 20 per cent in the last 20 years, and subsequently the incidents of strokes has fallen by a huge 60 per cent!

Did you know that 'healthy option' type food labels could be misleading. The food Standards Agency found that in some of these 'convenient' diet ranges there was more than half of a whole days recommended intake of salt and that many did little to reduce the amount of fat and sugar in comparison to the standard range.

Most were of little nutritional value due to the processed nature of the food. If you want to loose weight it would be more beneficial to prepare the food from fresh ingredients, enabling you to monitor your intake more accurately.
