After the mad frenzy of Christmas, January can often seem like a bleak month. The weather is awful, days are short with little sunshine and most of us are overspent and overdrawn! But its also an excellent time to begin new regimes and learn new habits, start new projects and reinvent new lifestyles.
Christmas for most of us is a time for pleasing others, from scouring the shops for gifts, to writing cards and entertaining guests. So when the pressures off, New Year can be a time when we dedicate some time to indulging our own desires. Remember all those things you were putting off til 'after Christmas'? Well, now's the time to get on with them, no more excuses. This is a brand new year just waiting for you to live it - so get on and do just that!

If you are taking painkillers for headaches two or three times a week then a chat with your GP could be needed. We all get headaches from time to time but regular attacks should be reported to your GP. In some cases, actually taking painkillers on a regular basis could be the cause of further headaches. A small percentage of people can develop 'analgesic - dependent daily headache' and is common in over-use of the painkillers which contain codeine. Try switching to plain paracetamol and take as soon as the headache develops, although if your GP has prescribed the codeine you need to discuss this first.

We all know that oysters are a supposed aphrodisiac but did you know that they can keep you young?

Oysters are full of vitamin A which is thought to slow down the ageing process. Less wrinkles, more love-life - can't be bad!

With the coughs and colds season upon us help is at hand with our useful hints:-

• Essential oils, especially added to a steam bath are one of the best ways of fighting a cold. Steam inhalations can really help fight the pain of sinus congestion.

• Olbas oil (available at chemists) contains clove, eucalyptus and method can be sprinkled onto a tissue or your pillow to aid breathing during a cold.
• Whilst its unclear as to whether large doses of Vitamin C can prevent a cold, its certain that its anti-oxidant properties can help to recover from one. Be careful - never increase a supplement beyond the levels indicated on the package.

• Hot toddys can really help. In fact any hot, tasty drink will encourage salivation so producing mucous secretion - mucus is the first line of defence against bacteria.
• Although cold weather can't cause a cold breathing in cold air can slow down two of our defences against infection. A cold nose slows down mucous production and the activity of white cells close to the surface of the nose making it more difficult to fight off infections.

• High stress levels trigger adrenaline surges which can lower our resistance to infections of all kinds, colds included. Lack of sleep can also lower resistance.
