WHY DO WE CRAVE FATTY FOODS?

According to Susan Schiffman, a professor of medical psychology at Duke University, North Carolina, delicious odours dissolve in fat molecules, creating mouth-watering aromas that are hard to resist - freshly baked cookies for instance.

Our bodies do need some fat to release fat soluble vitamins, and to provide padding to keep us warm, as well as protection for bones against injury. Essential fatty acids help make hormones and keep skin healthy. Too much fat of course, and especially saturated fat, can cause health problems for the heart and increase cholesterol levels.

Strike the right balance by actively burning off fat with exercise. Its okay to get 40 per cent of your calories each day from fat but they should be the unsaturated type - found in nuts, seeds, avocados, vegetable oils etc which directly benefit health.

Travelling home for Christmas?

If you're looking forward to seeing your family at Christmas but have to travel some distance, the journey may fill you with dread if you suffer from motion (travel) sickness. For some people, even relatively short car journeys are a nightmare. Here are a few tips that should help

• Ginger is an excellent remedy for travel sickness. Either chew on a chunk of fresh ginger or make a flask of ginger tea to sip on the journey - Boil slices of ginger in water for 10 - 15 mins, strain and allow to cool before drinking.
 • Avoid fizzy drinks before and during the journey
• Try to sit in the front seat of the car and look at a fixed point on the horizon to reduce the feeling of movement
 • Put a few drops of lavender essential oil onto a handkerchief and inhale periodically throughout the journey to calm and sooth the nervousness often associated with travel sickness.

Q: I have some medicines in my cabinet that have been there for some time. Are they safe to use?

A: Never ever take out of date medicines. They can cause serious harm. All blister packs should have a date stamp on them so discard safely if out of date. Boxed medicines and tablets should always be kept in there original packaging as the use-by-date is usually stamped on the box. Most eye formulations are short lived (Usually 28 days) so always read the date before use. I write the date on the box the day I open eye drops then I always know when to discard. The safest and best way of disposing of any old medicines and tablets is to take them to any convenient chemist where they will dispose of them for you.
