SLOWLY DOES IT

If one of your New Year Resolutions is to take life a little slower then you'll almost certainly be doing yourself a favour. Most of us these days take life at such a rush our stress levels, tension and general health are a real cause for concern. Tearing through life at a pace can lead to exhaustion illnesses, insomnia, headaches and underlying emotional problems which we seldom have time to deal with. Mile-a-minute people often develop a pattern of dealing with everything in their path in a hasty manner, neglecting themselves and possibly those around them. The sense of urgency in them is very often felt by their partner and children. Do you ever hear yourself saying 'Hurry up with your breakfast' or forget to ask your partner what kind of a
day they've had in case it takes too long to tell? Do you start every day with a list of jobs or things to remember then lie awake at night worrying that you didn't fulfil that day's quota? It might surprise you to know that people who pace themselves often accomplish more than those who rush from task to task seldom completing one. Pacers tend to prioritise tasks better, leaving more time to accomplish smaller items on the agenda. But with all the things we're supposed to get done in this life how can we slow down and yet still achieve so much? Well prioritising really essential jobs and cutting down on long lists is a start? Speedy people always have lists, either actual or in their head, and they're usually so long that no one could be expected to accomplish so many tasks. Good organisation is essential to a more relaxed lifestyle and doing things in a logical, orderly fashion will save time. A well organised household will always function better than a chaotic one - being able to find what you're looking for is easy if you returned it to its place last time you used it, and therefore saves time. The one most important thing you can do to create more time is to get organised. This may mean investing in adequate storage solutions, setting up filing systems and getting the family into a routine but this will all save time and tension later. Taking time out to order your home will be time well spent. And if your diary is over-scheduled that you're booked up for weeks in advance then you're trying to fit too much in, and the dates that are scheduled for a family or fun event will be the ones that get cancelled or pushed to another time. Putting off doing the dusting will only result in a dusty house - putting off friends and family will eventually lead to strained relationships. Try to focus on what is really important to you, what can wait till another day and which tasks you may be able to delegate. Don't think of relaxing as being lazy, it's an absolute requirement for good health both mental and physical and don't be hard on yourself if some jobs are left undone. Instead, praise yourself for the things you have accomplished. Always give yourself realistic targets and allow enough time for each thing to be done and if you do start to feel pushed then say so. Don't become a martyr and soldier silently on if all you really need is a little help - many people who complain of never receiving help have never asked for it! Don't fall back on the 'I shouldn't need to ask' sentiment - that way you'll become a drudge who resents every task. Take help whenever it's offered and remember its not how many 'balls you can keep in the air' that counts - it's how many you safely catch that matters.

Many headache sufferers find that their pain can be eased by using an ice pack but it's not always convenient to sit with a bag of frozen peas against your temple. Have a go with Mentholatum Migraine Ice stick-on patches (available at chemists). They contain a water based gel that can be cut to size and placed on the most painful area.

Does Lady Luck smile on you or are you the sort she walks past and ignores? Many of us believe that we make our own luck and others believe that good luck it something that happens to other people. Whatever the realities, good or bad fortune is mainly a perception and there is a lot we can do to change the way we see things. One thing is certain, if you look for doom and gloom in life then you'll almost certainly find it - there's plenty of it around after all. Protecting yourself from the blow of a crisis by always expecting the worst is a pretty defeatist attitude and in reality leads to negativity, misery and despondency. Make this the year that you change your approach to life. Forget the bad things that have happened - you can't change them by dwelling on them, and focus on making small changes to the way you think about things. If there is a particular chore which you hate doing, try to tackle it in a different way. If you're unhappy with the way you look then do something about it. Most of all, don't set your sights on the unreachable goals, pinning your hopes on a lottery win or landing a Hollywood film contract may be unrealistic but all of us have the ability to make life better for ourselves by imposing a change - be it your job, your hairstyle or even your partner.
