With the party season looming we all like to eat, drink and be merry. But there’s nothing very merry about a raging hangover the next morning! We need to be aware of what constitutes ‘safe’ levels of drinking and realise that alcohol affects different people in different ways. If you have a small body frame alcohol will show its effects more quickly as will drinking on an empty stomach. Women are affected by alcohol a lot quicker and more severely than men as they tend to have a smaller body mass, and female bodies contains less water making the effects of dehydration more pronounced.

One unit is considered to be 10ml of pure alcohol. A unit of alcohol is equal to roughly half a pink of normal strength lager, cider or bitter; one pub measure
(25 ml) of spirits or a 50 ml measure of fortified wine (ie sherry or port). You need to remember that different drinks have different strengths so you can’t always be sure how many units you have had, especially if you mix your drinks during the evening. Guidelines state that men can drink between 3-4 units of alcohol a day without any serious risk to health – for women, this is reduced to 2-3 units per day.

Unit Basic Guide

• 1 pint ordinary strength lager - 2 units
• 1 pint strong later - 3 units
• 1 pint bitter - 2 units
• 1 pint cider - 2 units
• 175ml glass wine - 2 units
• Measure of spirits - 1 unit
• 1 Alcopop - 1.5 units
• Can of beer or lager - 1.5 units

Of course, over the Christmas period many people do binge drink and feel worse for wear the following day. People vow to “Never Touch Alcohol Again” when suffering with the hangover from hell. The obvious cure to not getting a hangover is to avoid alcohol altogether, however if not, there are various methods that you could try to help you feel bright and breezy again or to help prevent one in the first place.

• Eat plenty, as it will help protect the stomach from the irritating effects of alcohol, along with a glass of milk which slows down the absorption of alcohol.
• Alternate with soft drinks. Alcohol is very dehydrating so if you drink water between you will be more hydrated.

• Try drinking some orange juice before bed as the Vitamin C speeds up the metabolism of the alcohol by the liver.

• Have some toast, a lack of sugar is responsible for that wobbly feeling, and it will settle your stomach too. A sports drink contains everything you need and is a convenient alternative.

And if you still wake up with a hangover.

Anatomicals Hangover Remedy

• A good fry up may give you a much needed energy boost.
• Caffeine, a cup of tea or black coffee or a can of coke, but will only make you better for a short time.
• Water, combats dehydration.
• Fruit juice replaces lost vitamins. The fruit sugar boosts your energy levels and may help your body get rid of toxins.
• Sleep, try to get as much as possible. Your body is working extra hard to rectify the mess you’ve made of your internal organs. This will make you sluggish..

But its not just alcohol that people have too much of, food is also an over indulgent Christmas tradition. Christmas pudding, brandy butter, mince pies, chocolate liqueurs. There are many rich foods that can trigger a bout of indigestion or heartburn. You can still enjoy the festive fare, but take practical steps to prevent or
alleviate the misery of heartburn, nausea, wind or abdominal pains.

• Avoid eating within an hour of going to bed.
• Drink a glass of skimmed milk at bedtime.
• Try sleeping propped up with pillows.
• Have a suitable indigestion remedy in your medicine cabinet. (Try Bisodol Peppermint Indigestion Tablets approx £3.65 Boots or Remegel indigestion Relief Tablets approx £3.99 Boots)

Ok, we have all done it and over indulged and feel terrible afterwards, but try and get a little exercise, go for a brief walk which will help get everything moving again! Fresh air can do you the world of good and not only will it make some space in the digestive system, it will also help burn off any of those extra calories through excess food and alcohol!
