With all the winter germs that are around at the moment we are becoming increasingly aware of how important it is to wash our hands frequently.

It is one of the most simple ways of preventing the viruses which cause coughs, colds, flu and stomach upsets. Of course coughing or sneezing into a handkerchief is essential to help stop the spread of airborne bacteria, but we can protect ourselves from many germs simply by washing our hands.

If you find you would like to take an anti-bacterial cleanser with you in your bag then Boots have a good range that will do the job - If you are in a situation where you don't have the necessaries to wash your hands then these formulas will clean and sanitize the hands quickly and easily.

Cuticura do an anti-bacterial gel at just £1.35 for 100ml,good for decanting down into smaller quantities to take with you, or Carex do a handy sizes pouch of hand wipes at just over 70p. If you feel you need to wipe down the surfaces of where you are - a work canteen or even loo seats - then Bugs Away Anti-Bacterial Surface Wipes are just the ticket.

Encouraging children to keep their hands clean isn't always easy but they'll love the no-fuss foam cleanser from Cuticura in Juicy Apple.

If you find the cleansing gels a little too drying on the hands then Cuticura do a cleansing lotion, which combines the killing action of the hygiene gel with a moisturizer to keep the hands smooth, at around £1.45 for 100ml.

Most of these products are proven to kill at least 90% of common bacteria and really can help protect you from other peoples germs.

For many people, having a 'Flu Jab' each winter has become routine. Whilst flu affects us all differently and different strains may produce different reactions, a percentage of people are considered to be of greater risk from the effects that flu can have on us.

Those with asthma or Chronic Bronchial diseases are advised to consider the flu vaccination as a bout of flu can greatly exacerbate their usual symptoms. Those with any immune deficiency illness may also benefit for the same reasons.

It is definitely worth mentioning to your G.P if you find you are getting severe or frequent bouts of flu as you may want to consider being vaccinated. Do note that the standard flu jab will not protect you
against Swine Flu and that you need a separate vaccination for protection from this particularly virulent strain of flu.

You may well be entitled to a free NHS vaccination and you can check with your G.P about this but if not Boots offer full advice and vaccination procedures for around £12.99.
