Whilst we are all being urged to eat more fruit, and no-one challenges the fact that it is good for you, it can cause pain and discomfort to those who suffer from sensitive teeth or a sensitive gullet.

Fruit acid is particularly aggravating to sensitive teeth and if you are a sufferer you must make sure to use an enamel strengthening toothpaste.

Brushing after eating fruit can help, but if the problem persists you may be wise to decrease the fruit in your diet and increase your intake of vegetables – making sure of a good variety and including as many different colours of vegetables as possible.
Fruit acid can also aggravate digestive problems such as reflux, oesophagitus and stomach ulcers, citrus fruit being a particular problem.

Again, increasing vegetable intake and decreasing acidic fruit can help – ask your GP which veg are less likely to irritate or cause excess stomach acid and your dentist will be able to give advice on which fruits to avoid.

Chicken & Broccoli Bake

Ingredients

350g Cooked Chicken Breast
200-250g of Cooked Broccoli Florets
200g Mushrooms
2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
4 Rashers of Lean Bacon
½ Glass of White Wine (Optional)
¼ Pint Double Cream
100g Cheddar Cheese

Preparation

Cut the Bacon into strips
Wipe and halve the Mushrooms
Grate the Cheese
Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees

Heat the Oil in a large frying pan or wok, add the strips of bacon and quickly fry until the bacon starts to crisp, then add the mushrooms and cook for around 2 minutes, just to soften them enough.

Stir in the broccoli and chicken, add the wine (if using) and season with a little salt and pepper.

Transfer to an oven-proof dish, pour over the cream and sprinkle the grated cheddar on the top. Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes until thoroughly warmed through and the cheese has began to bubble and brown.

Seasoning a New Pan or Wok

All new pans take time to become ‘seasoned’ but to give them a start;-
• Wash and dry the pan to remove any production oils or greases.
• Smear a small amount of cooking oil and a few tablespoons of salt all over the inside of the pan, covering the entire base and internal sides.
• Fry for about ten minutes.
• Let the pan cool naturally with the salt and oil still in it.
• Wipe out with kitchen roll.
There is little need to wash your wok, cleaning with kitchen roll after each use is sufficient. To help seal in the flavours, brush with a small amount of oil before storage. The more you use your wok, the better it will become.

With the children back at School and chilly autumn evenings ahead you’ll be looking for some filling and nutritious meals to serve them when they come home starving.

Take a look at Annabel Karmel’s After School Meal Planner for some new ideas on what to feed them and for the under 5’s, why not invest in Annabel Karmel’s Superfoods for Babies and Children.

Both books offer a variety of easy to prepare after school meals and are available at all good book shops or from the Annabel Karmel website, or at www.amazon.co.uk.
