Behind
the Scenes at London Fashion Week
Especially
for UKHairdressers.com - we have a report from Paul Knights - the
busy stylist who has been mixing with the trend setters and fashionistas
at London's Fashion Week. Working behind the scenes, it's an event
where stylists are in big demand to create the looks and attitudes
needed to give the catwalk models the "wow" factor.
|
"Everything
at Fashion week was great, I worked flat out at the shows,"
says Paul, owner of Paul Knights a salon in Oulton, Leeds.
"Shows this season went to the prep wire, where time was
maxed out and every second used. This season sees a celebration
of architecture within hair and allows expressive shapes
and clever design bringing London where it should be at
the edge of fashion."
Working with stylist Peter Gray on shows for such leading
fashion houses as 'Paul Smith', 'Jasper Conran' and 'Noki',
Paul is still buzzing from the whole experience.
|
"In
between the hair tests for Paul Smith etc, myself and Peter were
needed at the Baftas to style the stars including Thandie Newton,
which we managed to do on a tight time line."
Here's the briefs the stylists were given and some notes about how
the looks were achieved.
Jasper Conran
Initial brief/trend:
Soft fringes made from the pony tail, loose unfinished outlines
giving a soft feather like look.
How was the look created?
Hair all taken back into a low pony tail then wrapped back up the
head to create fringes on all the girls.

Smith
Initial brief/trend:
The stylists were asking Peter to create a new image to
coincide with the fresh and bold new direction that Paul
Smith are taking in their ladies fashion, sophistication
but not slicked.
How
was the look created?
Sides slicked back with gel and placed in a high
bun, then top section backcombed from the front
to give a carpet like effect in the hair.

Noki
Initial brief/trend:
Peter was giving a free range to design a look that was
post apocalyptic, hair was javelin like pony tails sticking
diagonally out of the head, self supported by banding
and product.
How
was the look created?
The hair was prepped with lots of product and
dried in, then scrapped into a crown pony with
lots of hairspray to give a tight effect, then
hair was banded to create a strong base in the
pony, using hairspray, drying it in as it went
along, and also using elastic in areas to support
the diagonal look.

Knight says, "One of the show's I did was with
a ground breaking designer 'Noki', who really
took design to the highest level. I chatted to
Skin from Skunk Anansie who was in the show as
a model, supporting the designer. She wore an
all white outfit which looked amazing on her skin
and was the star of the show."
