about working on the show
Plus find out about his key trends for 2012
Working on the X Factor has been a massive honour and achievement.
I approached the show looking to push boundaries and I’m really
pleased with the way things have gone – we’ve mixed in avant
garde styles with wearable commercial hair that’s different
every week. I’m still amazed by the sheer scale and budget
that goes into the show and the performances.
Your hair is your hero so making sure the contestants were
happy with their transformations was a big part of the process.
Over the weeks we have worked in key trends and taken inspiration
from the celeb world, but most importantly we wanted to make
the contestants into individuals. I have got to say a huge
thank you to Matrix, who have been really helpful and supportive
and have provided the products and colour needed to complete
the transformations and the looks throughout the series.
I have also had a helping hand from some of the members of
the Matrix Artistic team, which has been great - it’s an incredible
amount of work for one person, although there are fewer people
to work on every week...
Jamie
created a real trend with Amelia's baby pink look. She
may have come third in the X-Factor final, but is a
real winner in the style awards. |
Special
mention has to go out to Amelia Lily, who came to the show
with a very strong Pixie Lott vibe and platinum white blonde
hair. We took her very on trend look and coloured her hair
baby pink and gave her a more rocky, grungy short hairstyle.
To get hair like Amelia’s, follow these simple steps:
Step One: If you need, do what I did with Amelia and
add a few extensions for length to bulk the hair out.
Step Two: Apply Matrix Loosely Defined and blow dry
the hair smooth, aiming the dryer nozzle down the hair shaft
to keep it shiny.
Step Three: Spritz on Matrix protective spray and taking
small sections, tong the whole head.
Step Four: Dust the hair out using Matrix Mega Dust Volume
Texturiser to make it fuller and more grungy with lots of
body. Literally shake the product into the roots and lengths
and ruffle with your fingers.
Jamie loved creating styles for Misha B -
big hair, a real style statement.
Misha B is a hairdresser’s dream. She has such a massive personality
and she already has her own style identity. We have tried
to embrace the natural texture of her afro hair, as well as
experimenting with different styles by playing around with
wigs and hair pieces. To recreate Misha’s gorgeous soft curls,
use mini straighteners to create ribbon curls in thin sections
all the way through the hair. Then brush these out using your
fingers to create a structured yet messy finish.

ready for another dazzling performance. |
My
hero products for the show are Matrix Loosely Defined - it
just works on everyone and all hair types, I’m going through
tubes of it! Mega dust is another big favourite, I’ve used
it on Amelia, all the boys and Little Mix. There’s a lot of
texture and messiness at the moment so it’s a dream to use.
We’ve taken Perrie from Little Mix to an ashy charcoal grey
blonde and the mega dust keeps it matte and dull while creating
colour and texture at the same time. I also use a lot of hair
extensions and pieces.

Jamie’s Trends for 2012:
|
Texture
and movement will continue to be big in 2012. |
|
We
will also see a slow movement away from bleached blonde
hair to more experimental tones. |
|
Smooth,
straight hair is also coming back so don’t be afraid
to combine textures. |
|
Androgynous
hair, with that masculine but feminine feel, will still
be huge in 2012 with deep side partings and slick hair.
