All
shampoos were not created equal!
Recent
press has challenged the value for money of different brands
of shampoo, They’ve compared a few labels and found some common
ingredients in low priced supermarket shampoos and the higher
salon brands.
This is a bit like saying all straighteners have ceramic plates,
heat rods, thermostats, casing and a plug – therefore they
must all give the same results regardless of the price. Anyone
who’s ever owned a top of the range ghd, knows that this is
a long way from the truth. There is a world of difference
between cheap, basic model straighteners and the beautifully
crafted, heat perfect ghd.
Creating eye catching headlines is what the media does and
if the truth is watered down or a bit fuzzy round the edges.
They won’t be worried when your look in the mirror, a couple
of months down the line and see the results of using the wrong
shampoo for your hair.
Here at UKHairdressers we receive many reviews from customers
who regularly use salon quality shampoos and conditioners,
these premier brands do make a difference to the way their
hair feels and copes with the environment and day to day treatment
it receives.
The big names in the shampoo business spend a lot of money
on research and development, they provide a choice of products,
so you can be sure your hair type is receiving the best care.
Some brands such as abba Pure, John Masters and Little Sprout
don’t use the detergent Sodium laureth sulfate, responding
to consumer demand for an informed choice. Many take it a
step further and use only eco friendly packaging.

Feel good about looking good
“Caring about yourself and caring about the earth don’t
have to be mutually exclusive. For over 20 years, this has
been the guiding force in creating Super Natural Beauty for
your hair, your skin, and your home.
John
Masters Organics grew out of my desire to create a luxury
beauty line that treats the earth with respect. The result
is the culmination of the hard work performed by people all
over the world. Their dedication to growing and harvesting
organic and wild-crafted ingredients is honoured at John Masters
Organics.
We only get one body, and we only get one planet. Why not
treat them both with the utmost care? I didn’t want to deal
with chemicals and synthetics everyday, and I truly believed
that when given the option, others would feel the same. Why
use synthetics when natural products work better and are safer
for the environment?”
All ingredients must meet John’s strict guidelines:
1. No sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, DEAs, MEAs, or TEAs
2. No GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism)
3. No petro-chemicals
4. No animal testing
5. No artificial colours, fragrances or fillers
6. Ingredients must be as organic as possible
7. All plant extracts and essential oils must be certified
organic whenever possible
8. All essential oils used must be steam-distilled and not
extracted with propylene glycol - which kills the effect of
the oils

10. All ingredients must be proven to be beneficial to the
hair or skin
11. All ingredients must be harvested in an environmentally-friendly
manner (wild-crafted)

We asked Philip Kingsley to comment on the recent comparison
of shampoos in the market place.
He said:
“There is no doubt that Premium products of any description
are better. For example: Premium skin treatments and make-up
have premium quality ingredients and fragrances. Premium hair
products similarly. All shampoos and conditioners cleanse
and condition hair, but the way they do it and the way they
leave the hair varies enormously.
Premium hair products are also more specific for different
hair types and state it more clearly on the label. In use
they feel better to the touch, smell better, and are packaged
better. Psychologically too, a consumers’ morale is boosted
by knowing they are using a respected Premium Brand.”

Original
Sprout
Worry-free luxury – no sulfates, 100% vegan
Favourite with children and grown-ups! Stylist Inga Tritt
founded the Original Little Sprout® in 2003 and Original Sprout
in 2007. The name was inspired by the birth of her daughter
Maya. Wanting to use the safest bath products led to her trying
natural baby shampoos. To her surprise, all the shampoos reeked
havoc with her daughter’s hair and sensitive skin. To remedy
the problem Inga created the first of it’s kind, ultra moisturising
natural baby bath and styling products. The benefits of being
a master stylist with professional experience and a mother
with real life experience culminated into Original Sprout,
a globally trusted natural family brand.
Safe Families
Parents trust Original Sprouts superior performance and worry-free
ingredients. Cancer and early puberty can be linked to hormone
disruption, hence no natural or synthetic hormone disrupters
such as soy, yam, tea tree, lavender, parabens, titanium dioxide,
nano-particles, formaldehyde or phototoxic citrus oils are
ever added to their formulas. In addition formulas are free
of insect attracting honey or fruit.
Worry-free
Fragrances
Essential oils and perfumes commonly contain skin penetrating
estrogen disrupters. Because of this Original Sprout has non
estrogenic fragrances created, so smelling good is worry-free!
Their fragrances are free of ingredients linked to cancer
concerns such as citrus oils, phthalates, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde,
styrene toluene, chlorobenzene, glycol ethers and musk.
Healthy Women
Staying healthy and beautiful is easy with Original Sprout.
Women trust and enjoy the superior, prevention based formulas.
Each product is made specifically without estrogen disrupting
or contaminated ingredients. Certified green and clean fragrances

Here’s a list of some ingredients found in shampoos and
their uses:
Aqua: Water
Dimethicone: Silicone like, enables shampoo to distribute
easily and quickly through the hair.
Cetyl Alcohol: Thickens and softens shampoo and helps
bind the other ingredients together
Cocamide Mea: Adds body to the shampoo and creates
foam
Cocamidopropyl Betaine: It is milder on the skin than
the benzine sulfonates, so reduces the amount of harsher detergents
needed. Thicker than other ingredients, it can be added to
give the right viscosity. It also has anti-static properties,
so the hair doesn’t jump to plastic combs and brushes when
drying the hair. It attracts moisture from the air, preventing
hair from drying out. It even has antibiotic properties that
can prevent spoiling of the shampoo
Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate: A secondary detergent
Glycol Distearate: Is added to make shampoos opaque
and pearlescent
Glycol Stereate: Another thickener that helps keep
other ingredients in solution, including perfumes
Polyquaternium: Has anti-static properties and can
help bind water to hair by forming a sheer film over it, makes
hair easier to comb
Sodium chloride: Common salt helps bind ingredients
together and thickens the shampoo, cheap shampoos can contain
a higher proportion of salt that will make eyes sting. More
expensive thickeners are used in premium products to reduce
this problem
Sodium laureth sulfate: The main detergent in many
shampoos
