Is your hair a hit or near miss?
We all have bad hair days, when it needs washing and there's just no time, when it frizzes and won't straighten, when your new extensions suddenly come out in his hands! But a staggering 190,000 female motorists have blamed their hairstyle for causing an accident or a 'near miss'!

Copying all the latest celebrity trends can become a dangerous business, once you get behind the wheel of your car. If the killer heels don't get jammed under the
accelerator and the cute little dog 'in a bag' on the passenger seat, doesn't see a cat through your window..... then in all likelihood, your hair trend could be an accident waiting to happen!

I didn't see that coming!

How many times have you heard the immortal words from distracted drivers...

"Oh, I didn't see that"
"Where did that car come from?"
"What Stop sign?"

Be honest, have you ever made a sudden manoeuvre as a result of your hair limiting your vision whilst driving?
Should you steer clear of this year's celebrity trend for long, eye-skimming fringes or continue to join the growing number of British female motorists who are putting their passengers and themselves at risk?

After all, celebrities can hide behind a curtain of hair anytime they want to...they are frequently chauffeur driven and don't need to worry about a sudden loss of vision as they go round the bend!

Hair raising facts...

According to research, conducted by the female-friendly insurer, Sheilas' Wheels, some interesting facts have emerged.

67% of women currently have a hairstyle than could fall into their eyes whilst driving.

21% only a fifth of women, actually secure their hair off the face before driving.

An amazing 9 million female motorists say they never secure their hair back before getting behind the wheel.

The reasons women have for not securing their hair back include:
33% don't believe it's necessary
8% don't remember to bring a hair tie
8% don't want to ruin an existing hairstyle

53% - over half of women, prioritise style over practicality when it comes to hairstyles. 9.5 million female drivers never consider how their peripheral vision might be limited or obscured when choosing a hairstyle.

The following hairstyles were voted the top three most dangerous on the roads:
50% The long fringe
44% Sweeping fringe
5% Short layers to frame the face

Are you checking your mirror for the wrong reasons?

Apart from obstructing female motorists' sight, hair is frequently a source of distraction. 57% of women in the survey, confessed to rearranging their hair whilst driving, pushing it away from their face, leaving them temporarily out of control of their car.

The survey highlights the hidden dangers of some hair trends, fashionable hairstyles are never going to be the most practical and it's worth keeping a few hair accessories in the glove compartment, like hair grips, bands, section clips for a safe journey. Sunglasses can also be a problem, designer ones, whether real or imitation are frequently made with wide opaque arms that obscure your peripheral vision. Though they do make a fashion statement when worn as an 'Alice band' to draw the hair up and away from your face.

Martyn Maxey, hairdresser to the stars, commented: "For some celebrities, a change of hairstyle is headline news. Take Kate Moss and The Fringe for example - in recent weeks we've been inundated with requests for the long fringe and despite it falling over the eyes, it's now a fashion statement and people want it."

Tips to keep yourself and passengers safe when driving:

1/ Make sure you can see clearly all round when driving - if the last time you could see where you were going safely, was when you passed your test, it's time to think again!

2/ Stilettos, wedgies and platform shoes may be essential to compliment your outfit, but they can easily cause problems under the pedals. Try keeping a pair of shoes in the car, just for driving - pays dividends, because you won't be scuffing the heels of your favourite shoes and boots.

3/ It's hard to believe girls, but cars really don't just look after themselves indefinitely! Sometimes you have to get up close and personal with that stuff under the bonnet. For lots of helpful advice about keeping your motor roadworthy, go to
www.checkthatcar.com
You'll find everything there from topping up the wash wipe fluid and oil; to checking tyre pressures for each make of car. Tyres are expensive, but the fine for getting caught with a faulty one is an eye popping £2500 per tyre.
4/ Don't forget your MOT - lots of people do, male and female! There's a £60 Fixed Penalty for getting caught without one. That's the cost of a couple of fab outfits
in the mega sales that are on at the moment. If you're not sure where your nearest testing station is, go to www.ukmot.com and search their online directory. Register with them and they'll even send you an email reminder, so you don't miss the next one!
