The
Players
For Weddings…
It’s that time of the year again – stretching from 14th February, to the
end of June; from Valentine’s Day, through the full swathe of satin and
tulle, that is the Wedding season. A time when the ‘Commitment Phobe’ tends
to keep a low profile! Of course they’re on hand to party hard at stag dos
and can sometimes be persuaded to write speeches and be best man, but when
the girlfriend starts looking misty eyed, or worse – broody, that’s when
they get a bit shaky.
Playing
The Field
Other well known members of the Commitment Phobe or CP Club are the elusive
Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Jude Law, Calum Best, Robbie Williams, even
our second in-line Prince William, failed to make an honest woman of the
lovely Kate Middleton.
Thanks to his attentions over the past four years, a posse of photographers
followed her everywhere; her outfits are subjected to scrutiny; columnists
reveal the price tags and where she shops. She also stayed with her folks
over the festive period, because HRH was in Scotland shooting or something,
which meant opening a ring shaped box on Christmas Day was not in ‘ones’
diary. In March, she had to endure a worse for wear HRH on tabloid front
pages caught with an inappropriate handful. This may have been her cue to
ditch the Prince or at least the catalyst that defined the beginning of
the end.
To Commit or Not Commit?
Take Hugh Grant for instance (and many women would given the chance), he
must rate as a paid up, lifetime member of the CP Club. Liz Hurley waited
12 years, for that elusive proposal and eventually lost the will to nail
her man. He’d put off asking the question for so long, he convinced them
both, they were more like brother and sister.
Years
Later
Now it’s the turn of Jemima Khan, a more beautiful, elegant woman with a
sense of fun and social conscience would be hard to find. She has no interest
in his £42 million pound fortune as her own wealth far exceeds such loose
change; her father was the late millionaire Jerry Goldsmith. However, she
appears to love the floppy fringed Commitment Phobe, enough to risk issuing
the ultimatum, “give up the compulsive flirting and make an honest woman
of me!”
She also dared him not to attend La Hurley’s multi-cultural nuptials and
promptly put him on ice.
Fireworks
After a three-year romance, lighting the touch paper and standing back
like this, can sometimes result in the most amazing fireworks of passion
and promise of undying love. Or it can all blow up in your face and disappear
into a million fragments, leaving you with just his designer sweater and
aftershave for comfort.
If Anyone Knows A Reason…
Hugh managed to stay away from Liz Hurley’s marriage to Arun Nayar, whether
this was to pacify Jemima we’ll never know. Or it could have been a reluctance
to see his old flame of many years, finally marrying someone else. Or
worst-case scenario …perhaps he didn’t trust himself not to stand up (like
Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate) and crash into the ceremony to declare
to the shocked wedding party that he still loved her….
Love Actually
Anyway, he didn’t go – so after a split of three weeks from Jemima, they
were again seen dining out. Jemima left Hugh’s house at midnight the other
evening with a big smile on her face. The evasive Mr Grant was seen the
next day, wearing the same clothes as the day before, giving rise to speculation
that he may have joined her later for a ‘secret’ assignation, by slipping
out of the back door! All the signs indicate a rekindling of their affair
and the fireworks could yet deliver a sparkler for her left hand.
Bridget Jones
If Liz Hurley and Bridget Jones can leave Hugh Grant and move on – anyone
can, give yourself a makeover, get yourself in tiptop shape and you will
feel a million dollars, ready for that special date or function.
