UKH Interviews Giles Robinson,
Senior Stylist with John Frieda

THE ELEMENTS OF TRANSFORMATION
John Frieda believes in transforming hair - to a point where it’s not just an element of your personal style, but a defining attribute, one that inspires admiration and envy in equal parts.
Achieving that level of excellence – the level that true style connoisseurs expect – calls for a unique formula - cutting edge salons in the world’s fashion capitals with artists dedicated to their craft – and to helping their clients achieve their true style potential.

Someone who has been a key player in the John Frieda success story is Giles Robinson, Senior Stylist. We were delighted to interview Giles recently and ask him about his interesting career and get some insight into the life of a top stylist, plus some top tips for our website visitors. You can see what he had to say and follow his video hair styling “How-to’s”.

THE JOHN FRIEDA STORY

When the first John Frieda salon opened on New Cavendish Street, London, no one could have imagined the impact it would have on the world of hair care. Fast forward three decades, and John Frieda® Hair Care products are personal favourites of celebrities, beauty experts and consumers worldwide.

After years spent working with chemists to develop the perfect prescriptive solutions, the John Frieda® Hair Care Experts revolutionised hair care with the innovative Frizz-Ease® Hair Serum, which eventually landed in Allure magazine’s "Cosmetic Hall of Fame" and was singled out by InStyle as "Product of the Decade." And the John Frieda® Hair Care Experts’ dedication to solving widespread hair care problems through innovative formulas and expert "how-to" instruction didn’t stop there.

The John Frieda® Hair Care Team of celebrity stylists has fuelled the company’s new product initiative with the inside track on hot, new celebrity hair trends. As part of the Kao (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kao Corporation of Japan) the global technology and research resources behind John Frieda® Hair Care products are unrivalled.

After the Frizz-Ease® range of products became a household name in the early 1990’s, the John Frieda®Hair Care Experts continued to pioneer fashion-forward range after range. Never content to rest, the John Frieda® Hair Care Experts are continuously reinventing and adding new, more technologically-advanced products to each range — products that meet women’s evolving needs.

Entrepreneurial in spirit and global in impact, John Frieda® Hair Care has consistently been the industry leader when it comes to innovative new products. Which begs the question: what will they come up with next?

INTERVIEW

Q: How did you get started as a stylist? Who were your hair mentors in the hair industry?
A: “I started as a Junior in my local salon at 14 sweeping hair and shampooing as soon as I was old enough at 16 I went straight to London to work for John Frieda, during my training and still now Joel Goncalves and Kevin Moss have been very supportive and influential in me becoming a top hairdresser and I learnt a lot about working on stage and in front of audiences travelling and working with John Frieda launching the products.”

Q: If you hadn’t become a hairdresser, which career would you have followed?
A: “I would have gone into property development with my Dad or a stock broker.”

Q: What is the strangest request you’ve received during your years in the hair industry?
A: “I’ve had to style hair for a fashion show in the volt of an old bank and style hair for a photo shoot on a windy beach using the ice cream kiosk for power and shelter.”

Q: Whose hair would you like to get your hands on and why?
A: “Katie Holmes now she’s split with Tom she needs a re- style maybe bring her bob back.”

Q: There have been many changes in hairdressing over the years. What in your opinion is the best innovation and the worst?
A: “Tangle teezers and the Brazilian blow dry are great inventions, not that anyone has them anymore, but someone should have changed the smell of perms.”

Q: Apart from a pair of scissors, what hairdressing tool or product would you never be without?
A: “A real bristle brush and John Frieda Luxurious Volume thickening lotion are a must for any kit.”

Q: We hear of celebrities flying their hairdressers all over the world, to help them cope with bad hair days. What is the strangest request you’ve received during your career styling for the stars?
A: “I have been flown all over the place including Australia to blow dry and paint black eye liner in a guys hair, he’d also try to make you his personal assistant and get you to pack and carry his bags etc that I would mostly refuse to do which ended in some interesting arguments.”

Q: Many of our web visitors want to become hairdressers; could you give them any special tips to help them on their way to success?
A: “Go to a really good salon with proven training and expect to work hard, you’ll know if you’ve made the right decision early on.”

Q: We’d love to know what your favourite hairstyle of all time is?
A: “I love Mia Farrow’s short pixie haircut, it looks so fantastic on her and it’s a style I love to cut.”
