At
this time of year I always start
to feel like an Earth Mother
and have a real yearning for getting
out onto the soil and growing my
own vegetables. The trouble is Im
absolutely useless at it!
Every year I trot down to the garden
centre and come back having spent
a fortune on tomato plants, strawberry
plants and the odd pear tree and
then proceed to waste a whole weekend
planting them up and attaching little
labels to them all only to fail
yet again.
Im a seasoned gardener and am lucky
to have a beautiful garden all planned,
planted and cared for by myself
and each year it continues to improve
and make me proud. But when it comes
to digging for victory Im definitely
not victorious. Last year was my
worst year yet I had one solo
pear on my tree which a spiteful
blackbird ate before I could get
my hands on it, three tomatoes,
two of which stayed green and a
pathetic total of four strawberries,
which were delicious but hardly
filling.
I did have a handful of green beans
which my niece donated from her
eco-class and again they were tasty
but not prolific. Im not sure exactly
where Im going wrong I water
daily and feed regularly and I spend
quite a bit of time looking at them
and saying supportive and encouraging
things to them but they just keep
letting me down.
Actually I think theyre just lazy
and cant be bothered, so this year
I think Ill follow their example
and not bother either!
