At this time of year I always start to feel like an Earth Mother and have a real yearning for getting out onto the soil and growing my own vegetables. The trouble is I’m absolutely useless at it!

Every year I trot down to the garden centre and come back having spent a fortune on tomato plants, strawberry plants and the odd pear tree and then proceed to waste a whole weekend planting them up and attaching little labels to them all only to fail yet again.

I’m a seasoned gardener and am lucky to have a beautiful garden all planned, planted and cared for by myself and each year it continues to improve and make me proud. But when it comes to ‘digging for victory’ I’m definitely not victorious. Last year was my worst year yet – I had one solo pear on my tree which a spiteful blackbird ate before I could get my hands on it, three tomatoes, two of which stayed green and a pathetic total of four strawberries, which were delicious but hardly filling.

I did have a handful of green beans which my niece donated from her eco-class and again they were tasty but not prolific. I’m not sure exactly where I’m going wrong – I water daily and feed regularly and I spend quite a bit of time looking at them and saying supportive and encouraging things to them but they just keep letting me down.

Actually I think they’re just lazy and can’t be bothered, so this year I think I’ll follow their example and not bother either!

Well, I’ve finally prized my Ugg Boots from my feet and put them away till Autumn. It really was like saying goodbye to an old friend – they’ve been so faithful all through the winter and I’ve absolutely loved wearing them but it’s time to drag the Sketchers and Birkenstocks out and give my feet an airing.

I must admit my feet have been freezing this week but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Anyway I’m looking forward to painting my toes in all the wild shades that don’t suit my fingers – I’ve always thought that finger and toe nails should match, but my very trendy friend says that’s so last week so I’m stepping out of my box and going for a contrast.

In fact a niece of mine is a nail technician so I may have a floral theme painted all over my toenails to celebrate the start of summer.

I must be a bit of a hippy chick at heart as I’ve been so delighted to see the return of kaftans, smocks cheesecloth this season! They’re all so much better than the 70’s version which all looked like either tents or maternity wear. I’ve added quite a few to my summer wardrobe – if we get a summer, that is.

If you’re a skinny-minny then go for the ones with elastic smocking at the waist and wrists for a pretty gypsy look, or if you’re fuller figured, choose a shape that falls away from the bust to detract from any lumps and bumps you may be conscious of.

All the cheesecloth and crinkle cotton around is a Godsend if you hate doing laundry as there’s no need to iron. Team them with the lovely jeweled toe-post sandals that are out there, an over-sized tote and huge sunglasses and you’ll look like an A-List Celeb!
