Have you gone dotty? Spots before the eyes? Well don’t worry, so have the catwalks. Everything is covered in polka-dots from evening dresses to pyjamas. And it doesn’t stop at fashion – home accessories too are full of dots.

Polka dots have been big news on and off since the 1950’s when black and white polka dots were a huge fashion statement and they have been making an appearance every now and then ever since.

You need confidence to wear some of the very bold black and white or red and white designs around but there are more subtle versions available from muted greens to really girly bubble-gum pinks.

If you don’t fancy adding dots to your wardrobe I’ve seen spots on all sorts of accessories from a beautiful toiletry and make-up bag combination in gorgeous turquoise to a set of pink polka dot tea, coffee and sugar containers!

I even noticed polka-dot wrapping paper when shopping on the High Street yesterday, and although I haven’t bought a spotty dress yet, I did invest in a lovely pair of dotty socks and I have my eye on a crazy polka-dot handbag with a cute little poodle dangling from the strap.

So if you’ve not gone dotty yet get out there and find something spotty!

Apparently we’ll all be wearing white jeans this summer – they’re absolutely essential to the fashion conscious wardrobe. Actually white trousers of all sorts are tipped to be the hottest item this summer especially when teamed up with the over-long t-shirts and short dresses around at the moment.

If you’re not as slim as you’d like to be, white trousers can be a bit worrying, but if you choose a boot-cut style and wear a little dress over the top this will disguise your chunkier areas. And to make the legs look longer if you’re a little short in that department go for a cropped style and team up with wedge heeled shoes – these always slim the ankles and give a nice long line to the leg.

There’s also a return to the gypsy, hippy-chick look that’s been popular for several summers now. ‘Next’ have a really big collection this year including floaty beaded tops and skirts in lovely shades of mocha and chocolate.

Turquoise is definitely in again – offering a slightly more muted alternative to some of the acid greens and oranges that around at the moment. If you are going to wear the really vivid colours that seem to be in every store just now, then don’t neglect your make-up. Whilst neutrals are kinder to the face, bright colours will sap your complexion so always wear at least mascara and a coloured lipstick – pale beiges and

neutral make-up will just look wrong with these bright shades so really go for it.

For those of us who are sometimes confused as to what to put together to come up with a really useful wardrobe, one of my favourite Stores, John Lewis, are offering a personal consultation to help you choose items that co-ordinate and that suit your individual shape – especially tailored to your summer needs.

They will give advice on what to take on holiday to make
your wardrobe work for you and save you packing everything and the kitchen sink just in case. Available in most of the stores, consultants are available from June to August, just call in advance to check availability.
