Well, I think it’s officially autumn and I’ve pulled all my thick socks out ready to wear in the coming weeks. The cold weather means extra care for the skin too – most peoples tans will have faded by now (the unaided variety anyway) and now is the time of year to dedicate some time to exfoliating.

I know it’s a chore to exfoliate the whole body sometimes but it is really important to slough off the dead skin cells before we cover up in trousers, socks, woolies and so on. And there are some easier ways these days – many shower gels contain a built in mild scrub and using on a daily basis will really benefit the skin. Follow up with a good quality body lotion and you should be able to avoid that ‘snakeskin’ look that always starts at this time of year.

If you’re not able to afford the more high-end prices of skincare its no excuse for neglect! Honestly, there are some excellent value-for-money alternatives that will really benefit the skin – look out for St. Ives range, a really good reasonably priced product that really works. Boots pharmacies offer some really inexpensive but effective ranges in their own brand labels or for a family product invest in a large tub of E45 cream which will suit all the family and treat a multitude of dry skin needs. Wearing a good lip balm is essential as the windy weather arrives and here it is worth investing in a good quality product.
Cheap lip balms can actually harm the lips in the long run and if cost is an issue then a small tub of Vaseline will be better than the hard, waxy lip products that are on the market.

Regular readers will know that I always preach about wearing gloves in the cold weather, but really it’s amazing how much difference they make to your hands and nails, which are particularly prone to drying out in the cold, windy weather. Ask any manicurists their opinion and I’m sure they will agree with me!

Pay particular attention to the condition of your hair going into winter – any time you spend on extra conditioning treatments now will reward you in the months to come.

I’m a real winter lover – I really love the darker evenings and snuggling up in winter woolies but I know that for many of you it can feel like a dark, dreary time of year. Try to keep your spirits up by
enjoying all the good things about winters – Christmas,

parties, lovely snuggly clothes, bright, crisp days, there really are a lot of positives to the colder months if you look for them, make yourself a list of all the nice things and take a look at it whenever you feel a little dreary.

For a homemade preparation...
For treating spots and blemishes try this –

• Mix a little honey, (around a teaspoon) with a pinch of turmeric and a tiny pinch of salt into a paste.

• Apply directly to the blemish avoiding the surrounding skin if possible and leave for half an hour.

• Remove with a cotton pad soaked in warm water.

• Apply several times a day if required and it should help to reduce the redness and swelling.

For an inexpensive hair treatment...
rub a handful of almond oil or coconut oil into the scalp very gently and lightly pull through to the ends.

Wrap in a towel for at least half an hour to allow the warmth to build up.
As with all oil treatments, when shampooing out, massage the shampoo neat into the hair before adding any water to the hair, otherwise you will find it difficult to remove the oil.
