This season, look out for the new 'trapeze' shaped tops which are so flattering. I've actually invested in a couple myself and love the shape they create.

Fitted at the shoulders, the generous triangular shape skims over the bust and is fuller at the hips, hiding any lumps and bumps, back fat or belly rolls! I actually love the look on skinnier people like me too, as they suggest a shape underneath - they suit large and small alike.

The shape works particularly well in jersey fabrics with a hint of stretch, particularly those designed with an inverted pleat on the back - again giving a nice shape on the shoulder blades then falling away to the waistline or hip giving the illusion of length not width.

Team this shape up with either palazzo or boot cut trousers to create symmetry.

If you're feeling the pinch this year and can't run to a new party dress, don't forget how a dramatic piece of jewellery can change an outfit. Last years little black dress will look completely different with a long, bold string of striking beads and larger drop earrings.

Choose a dramatic shade and the focus will be on the accessories and not the dress. Or if you wore it with beads last year, then dress it right up with a crystal or diamante elaborately styled necklace, earring and bracelet set, always available reasonably priced at this time of year.

Its also amazing how using a different shade of lip and nail colour can dramatically alter the appearance of an LBD. A deep red on lips and nails with diamante jewellery will look so different from the same dress worn with pearls and soft pearly white on nails with soft pinks for cheeks and lips.

You could change the look again by wearing a shrug, shawl or silky scarf and yet again by wearing a deep belt and long boots.

If you are investing in a classic black dress this year then take the time to choose wisely if you need it to work hard for you. Look for a fluid fabric which is easy on the eye and steer clear of too much detail which will limit its versatility.

Avoid over-styled neck lines, which again will be limiting - think of the classic original 'Chanel' black dress and think of all the possibilities to vary the style before you decide to buy.

If you like to give a good book at Christmas 'Bad Behaviour' by Sheila O'Flanagan might be one to consider.

It's a real 'girly' book, perfect for you best friend and has a real feel-good-factor. A number one best seller, Sheila O'Flanagans witty relationship observations deal with a best-friend-stealing-your-boyfriend situation.

You'll have definite feelings about the strong female lead characters and everything ends as it should do! Why not treat yourself to a copy at the same time and exchange views over the mince pies!
